brook trout (brookie, brook char, speckled trout, eastern brook trout) [salvelinus fontinalis]
Salvelinus fontinalis
Size 250g - 3kg, can reach 6.5kg.
Habitat Brook Trout are an introduced species to Australia originating from North America. They are found in clear, pure lakes, streams and rivers of the cooler temperate regions of Australia. They have a preference for cool alpine and swift flowing waters and stream populations have a tendency to move up into very small tributaries. Brook Trout have been stocked in N.S.W., Tas. and S.A. and although several stocking projects have persisted in these regions many have resulted in poor results. Only a few self sustaining populations have been established in some rivers in the Snowy Mountain and New England regions and of N.S.W. and the Clarence Lagoon and lakes of the Tyndall Ranges of Tasmania.
