Dated: 4 February, 2010
It may have been a little hard on the water this week with the wind preventing many from fishing, but that didn’t stop the diehards. Though the whiting have been the saviour and available in locations you can escape the wind, Busting schools of Salmon, Gummy Sharks and Snapper have continued to be plentiful.

1 is the total bag limit per person on Elephant Sharks which are due to infiltrate Western Port.

IFISH THIS WEEK: EPISODE 10 – SUNDAY 7th CHANNEL ONE HD
TWIN LAKES, TASMANIA
This weekend’s episode is a fly angler’s delight as I head back to the beautiful Twin Lakes system in Tasmania with Fly Fishing Guide Ken Orr. Ken is a bit of a local legend and he is on a mission to improve my fly-casting technique.

Good luck with that one Ken. It is blowing a gale and I hook my cameraman before I actually nail a fish. Eventually however, persistence pays off.

We fished both the top and Bottom Lake to land brown and Rainbow Trout on fly. I simply love this place and can’t wait to go back there and do it all again. The cottage overlooking the top lake has got to be one of the most relaxing places on the planet.

PORT PHILLIP BAY:
MT MARTHA:
We have received a few reports this week from anglers still targeting Snapper in 23 meters of water. The Snapper are still going well, but turn off very quickly. First light with a tide change has been the best time.
John Stevens fished the area last weekend to land 4 Snapper to 4kg’s. Pilchards were his referred bait.

MORNINGTON:
Staff member Peter Garbs fished with customer Brad out from Fishermans Beach off Mornington. The boys fished in 3 meters of water to catch their bag of calamari. The most productive jig was the Harimitsu 2.5 EOR colour. They also set anchor in the same area to their bag of garfish with prawn and silverfish being the top baits.

BEAUMARIS:
Staff member Jarrod was talking with a customer who has been doing well on the whiting in Beaumaris Bay. Most of the fish have been concentrated in 5 meters of water near the mussel farm. Berley is essential and best if hung in a pot from the water’s surface, this way the tide will disperse it further and if on the bottom. Pipi and mussel have been top baits with most of the fish ranging 30 to 41cm.

WESTERN PORT:
CLEELAND BIGHT:
Dave from Phillip Island dropped into the shop on Tuesday to report on the calamari fishing in Cleeland Bight of late. Dave and mates have been fishing just near the Red Markers to catch their bag of calamari on numerous occasions. Bait fishing with silver whiting on a squid prong has been the best method.
Dave and his brother also headed off shore to land a 30kg Mako shark after catching their bag of Calamari one day last week.

CORONET BAY:
The whiting fishing in Coronet Bay has been sensational this week. 2-3 meters has been the most popular depth with fish ranging 36-45cm. the top of the high tide has been the most productive time to fish with bass yabbies and pipi working well.

CORINELLA:
Simon Rinaldi from Red Hot Fishing charters reports some excellent fishing around Corinella this week. On charter Simon out his clients onto some memorable whiting fishing. Al together they caught 72 whiting in 2-3 meters of water with pipis the number one bait.
Simon then moved to the corals where they manage 2 Gummy Sharks to 5.5 kg’s on the slack tide.

TORTOISE HEAD:
Customer Peter Johnston had a cracker trip on the Whiting last Saturday morning. Fishing with his mate David the boys managed their bag of whiting ranging 32 to 40cm. a cocktail of tenderised calamari and mussel worked very well. The last two hours of the flood tide were most productive.

EASTERN CHANNEL:
Robin Grey from Peninsula and Western Port fishing charters reports some excellent fishing in the Eastern Channel last weekend. Anglers fishing in 10 meters of water have been getting the rewards. As the tide has been slower this week the deep water fishing has been more productive with most whiting being caught in the high 40cm’s.

WESTERN ENTRANCE:
After speaking with Gawaine Blake from Think Big Charters, he reports the Salmon are still thick in the Western Entrance. The best technique has been to troll small whiting Occy skirts around the outside of the busting school.

FLINDERS:
Customer Daz emailed in his report after fishing off Flinders last Saturday.
Although the calamari was hard to locate, Daz did manage their bag with the largest measuring 15” (Cone Length). They also managed some whiting to 44cm and a nice 44cm flathead.

CLOSE TO TOWN:
BARWON HEADS:
One of Staff member Jarrod’s FACEBOOK friends email Jarrod his report after fishing out from Barwon Heads last weekend. Young Mitch Bertacchini has been spending quite a bit of time on the Striped Tuna. Mitch reports that most of the fish have been between the 30 to 50 meter line between Barwon heads and the Port Phillip Bay entrance. Plenty of fish can be seen busting up on the surface which makes for awesome fishing with a heavy fly rod or a 5 kg plastics rod to cast small metal slugs or 4inch soft plastics about.
Mitch’s most success has come when trolling a spread of 4-6 small Christmas tree style lures, his best lure colours have been black, pink, green and white.

SHALLOW INLET:
Ryan from Anything Estuary Charters emailed in a cracker report after taking some clients to Shallow Inlet last weekend. It was one of those perfect glass, windless days where Ryan put his clients right onto the fish. Altogether they managed to bag out on King George Whiting with the fish ranging in size from 27cm to 41cm. Ryan said the best baits were best baits were frozen pippies and live Bass Yabbies.

INVERLOCH:
Customer Peter Butcher emailed in an old report but a very interesting one this week. While spending a week at Inverloch for the Christmas Break Peter managed a few salmon with the largest weighing 3 pounds.
The highlight of his holiday was however an estimated 70+ cm kingfish that swam up and down the jetty for one whole day. The young kids were trying everything to catch it. Peter live baited a salmon for an hour or so with no luck. The Kingfish was there for at least 6 or 7 hours and swam just below the surface but never went further than a meter or so from the jetty.

FRESHWATER:
LAKE DARTMOUTH:
Regular customer Dave Ven den broek fished Lake Dartmouth last weekend. Fishing the Mitta Mitta River he caught and released 14 trout to 7lb. All fish were caught on a Rainbow Trout imitation soft plastic.

LAKE CARGELLIGO:
Lake Cargelligo had undergone a carp eradication project in the last week of January by shutting off the Lachlan River at Condobolin.
As you may not know the European Carp were imported to keep the weeds and growth out of the water ways and irrigation channels but have become an environmental disaster!
It is believed the native fish go down deep into the mud until the water returns, but the carp not being native don't know that little survival trick.

INTERSTATE:
DARWIN:
Well, it looks like this are really starting to happen in Darwin. This week we were emailed a series of photos from a magnificent Barra caught. All I can tell you is the fish measured 1.37m and was caught by Milan Prochazka in the East Alligator River.
Speaking of which, Staff member Jarrod still has one seat available for Darwin on April 6, 7 and 8. Call Jarrod on 5996 6500 if you’d like to come.

NEW PRODUCT:
This week we just had landed the shipment of POWER JIG squid jigs. Available in a range of size and colours they are deadly. Featuring needle point barbs, cloth covered and outstanding graphics, theses jigs are proven calamari food.
Paul took the first and only sample that was in the country a few months ago for testing, watch below.

FISHING CHARTERS WITH MITCH CHAPMAN
Staff member Mitch has teamed up with Gawaine Blake from Think Big Charters in search of Gummy Sharks in Western Port. If you would like to jump on board, call Gawaine on 0423 696 061.

THIS WEEKS WEATHER:
Unfortunately the weekend isn’t looking the best, however if you have Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday off work you’re in for a treat.
REMEMBER; ALWAYS CHECK THE CURRENT WEATHER FORECAST BEFORE HEADING OUT.

This weeks weather

RECOMMENDED FISHING LOCATION FOR THIS WEEKEND:
With the strong Easterly wind that is forecast and based on Staff member Peter’s report, I would be fishing around Mornington and Fishermans Beach. Although it still will be a little bumpy, the Easterly wind blows over the top of the land keeping in close relatively calm. With Calamari and Garfish on offer, this is a good location to be fishing his weekend.
As for land based opportunities, Gummy Sharks from the Beach at Cat Bay. A high tide during the night will be the best time to be fishing. Good baits such as Cured Eel Fillet, salmon or trevally fillet and the humble pilchard will be ideal.
REMEMBER; ALWAYS CHECK THE CURRENT WEATHER FORECAST BEFORE HEADING OUT.

Good luck and fish hard,
Jarrod, Bob, Paul, Jet, Cristy, Scott, Adam, Mitch, Hans, John, Aaron, Neil, Gary, Peter, Mark, Dave, Chris, Ray and Rentlo.
