Game fishing-
There have been some good numbers of marlin caught along the South Coast this week, with reports, patches of 26 degree water popping up from Batemans Bay right down to Bermagui. My cousin Scott managed to get a nice estimated 180kg Striped Marlin off the bay a couple of weeks ago which was released, and reports of more fish that size becoming more frequent. Skip baiting seems to be doing the damage at the moment, but fluro coloured skirts trolled a long way back, just out of the motors white water is getting a few fish as well. I’m heading down the Bermagui this weekend, hopefully to meet up with that 26 degree water and the marlin that will no doubt be swimming in it. Will let you know the result.
Reefs-
There have been some nice fish being caught on the inland reefs this week, with plenty of Snapper taken off Mossy Point and the 4,6 and 8 miles reefs off Bermagui are also producing the goods when it come to Snapper. Soft plastics are getting the bigger 5-6 kg fish, but strips of squid on a paternoster rig are catching the more pan sized fish. Flathead are around in good numbers as well. They are mostly being caught down near the brothers, just south of Bermagui, using the same rig as the Snapper.
Estuaries-
There are heaps of Dusky Flathead taking all sorts of soft plastic and hard body lures this time of year in all south coast estuaries. The lure that did the damage for me was the 70mm grasshopper squidgie fish, but 3 inch Gulp pumpkinseed minnows are getting a few fish as well. Haven’t heard much on the bream scene, will find out more for next week.

Mountains-
The Mountains are going off at the moment, with plenty of trout being caught doing a variety of different techniques, but being up early is the most important part no matter what type of fishing your doing. Many anglers trolling are getting there bag limit by mid morning. Flat lining tazzie devils in the green and gold colours are catching more fish than other colours. Down rigging are also getting more fish during the hottest part of the day, but the fishing is really tough. Personally I wouldn’t fish past noon, by then your sweating like a pig, and trout have gone deeper than you would ever like to place your lure.
Burrinjuck-
I was up at Burrinjuck on Saturday casting a few Outlaw Spinner Baits around the newly flooded timber and trees. The barometer was high and the water looked good, and plus reports from Burrinjuck were the best I have ever seen in a long time. With not catching allot of fish in the last couple of months, I was keen to get a native out of there. And when a chunky 55cm cod took my Outlaw spinner bait right at my feet, it was a feeling I haven’t felt in a long time. I was so glad to break the drought with a nice fish. As the sun and the temperature rose we switched to trolling some medium sized deep divers, which saw a couple more cod of the same size getting pulled into the boat. Halco poltergeists caught all the cod trolling.
Happy Australia day and catch heaps guys and girls.
