In this edition it's all about family fishing and we are very fortunate down here on the Mornington Peninsula where there are many places to spend some quality time with your family in and out of the water.

We visit Pope’s Eye and witness firsthand what lies beneath this area. Rosebud Reef is the next destination. Then we try to swim with Gummy Sharks but no go (it just made for a great blooper instead). We then finish of the show with nice catch of Squid caught off Sorrento.

Summary

Wild winter conditions have hit the Mornington Peninsula again with strong northerly winds and rain, making it difficult to launch our boat let alone go fishing! On a recent trip down to Cape Schanck we got caught, with winds gusting up to 30 kn on our arrival at the Cape. Whenever we get a series of strong northerly winds it discolors the water in southern Port Phillip Bay, and also produces unwanted weed in the shallow areas making it impossible to fish for Squid.

When conditions are right the fishing has been fantastic and will continue to be so over the next few months; depending on the weather of course! Looking in my fishing diary over previous years, this is the period I love fishing the most, as great catches of all species of fish can be caught in this quarter of the year.
Looking ahead

Gummy Sharks

Small perfect size Gummy Sharks ideal for the table will continue to be caught particularly in deep waters at Portsea, Sorrento, Rye, and Mount Martha, small strip baits are ideal for these and try using 4/0 hooks.

King George Whiting

The good news is the bigger fish are now finally here, it has taking a while! It is almost as if everything is running behind schedule in the fishing world. Fishing around shallow waters along the Mornington Peninsula is producing King George Whiting in fairly good numbers, this should continue into the next quarter.
Snapper
The deep water continues to produce Snapper with fish that are being caught are all in great conditions and really fight hard, particularly when you are using braided lines.
Reports

Garfish

have never seen so many Garfish in southern Port Phillip Bay before. On a recent fishing trip at night, while using a torch and shining it into the water, I was amazed at the amount of Garfish that was around the boat! They are certainly attracted to the light and we had no problems catching a good feed. Next time you are fishing at night or early morning try the same thing; these guys are fantastic in the frying pan.

Rosebud Reef

This is the time that this area stands alone. The shipwreck is producing Pinky Snapper ‘hand over fist’, of course the small ones can be a nuisance but fishing the right times and using the right bait you will get good quality Snapper here at first and last light. Many other species are also in this section of the Bay.

Squid, squid and more squid – great on the bait board and great on the family table. (photo C. Micallef)

Point Nepean

For me, if I'm looking for a BIG King George Whiting, Point Nepean is my destination. Here you’ll find great big fish, not many but certainly quality. Because this area is extremely strong in its current, fish come and go with the current. They do not hold up as they do in other areas so don't be put off if you can't locate the fish straight away. I have had my best results using Squid as bait.

20 new fish cleaning tables for anglers

Recreational anglers visiting coastal fishing spots now have the luxury of cleaning their catch in comfort thanks to 20 new fish cleaning tables across Victoria.

Fisheries Victoria Executive Director Anthony Hurst said new tables had been installed at key fishing destinations in recent months, bringing the total number installed by Fisheries Victoria to
more than 30.

Fifteen of the new tables are adjacent to boat ramps and popular fishing spots while another five have been installed on piers for use by land-based fishers.

“Whether you’re a serious angler who wets a line several times a week or a family fishing from a pier, these new tables make it easier to take some fillets home for the table,” Mr Hurst said.

Fish cleaning tables have been installed at:

• Curdies River at Curdievale
• Yambuk Lake boat ramp
• Public Reserve on the Glenelg River, Nelson
• Apollo Bay boat ramp
• Apollo Bay wharf
• Ocean Grove boat ramp
• St Helens boat ramp, Corio Bay
• Two tables adjacent to the Port Welshpool boat ramp
• Main wharf at Port Franklin
• Jetty at the main boat ramp at Inverloch
• Dawsons Cove at Paynesville
• Fishermans Wharf at Paynesville
• Shaving Point at Metung
• Johnsonville boat ramp on the Tambo River
• Fishermans Landing, Lake Tyers
• Main boat ramp at Lake Tyers
• Karbeethong (near Mallacoota) boat ramp and a second table on the jetty
• Main boat ramp at Mallacoota.

All of these new fish cleaning tables feature slanted stainless steel surfaces and many are roofed to protect anglers and their catch from the elements.

Fishing ideas wanted from Reel Vicorians

Recreational anglers can ‘have their say’ about fisheries management issues at 12 roundtable forums being held across Victoria in May and June.

This is the third year that Fisheries Victoria has toured regional Victoria listening to anglers and updating them about what is happening with their fisheries. Fisheries Victoria Executive Director, Anthony Hurst said last year’s forums had generated dozens of good ideas. “We have taken many of these ideas on board and implemented them,” Mr Hurst said.

“These include stocking larger numbers of freshwater fish or stocking more frequently and planning to build more fishing reefs like those off Frankston, Seaford and Aspendale.

“The first meeting will be at Frankston Yacht Club on Wednesday, May 11 and the final one at the Bendigo Legion Angling Club on Thursday, June 30.

These meetings are a great way for anglers to suggest improvements for their sport. Come along and learn more about developing new fisheries, fish stocking in waters recovering from drought and floods, what local Fisheries Officers have been doing and infrastructure improvements in your area such as fish cleaning tables and fishing platforms.

“We want all fishers to contribute new project ideas that enhance fishing across the state,” Mr Hurst said.
