Fishing on the shipwrecks off Port Lonsdale can produce good-sized Snapper at this particular time of the year (Photo C Micallef)

Calamari Special
In this edition of Charlie Micallef Marine Media we take a close look at the Calamari in southern Port Phillip Bay, they certainly have become a very popular species to target. We anchor up and use some old-style techniques, also we have some great underwater footage, and we end the show with a simple way to cook them.

Snapper

It’s all red, red and more red, as at last the water temperature has risen and many trailer boat anglers have taken advantage of the situation and managed to catch their first Snapper for the season over the last few weeks; it has only just begun. The northern part of Port Phillip Bay has been producing more reports than the southern end, this is normal as northern Port Phillip Bay can be up to 2° warmer than in southern Port Phillip Bay at this time of the year. This should change over the next few weeks; we are looking for 16°for it to really fire. Locally caught Squid in my opinion is still the number one bait to catch Snapper and there is certainly no shortage of them in the Bay at the moment.

Calamari will attack different coloured squid jigs at certain times of the day, it all depends on the position of the sun when you are fishing, this is called the silhouette effect (Photo C Micallef)

King George Whiting

These continue to be hit and miss again. We should be fine once the water temperature has risen up to 16°. I recently had a fish around Mud Island and found it extremely difficult to get past the small Leather Jackets that are in plague proportions in this area at the moment, hopefully they will move on soon. Close to shore they have been easier to catch, again locally caught Squid has been the best bait.

With the warmer weather upon us, snorkelling in the rock pools on the Mornington Peninsula is a great location to test out your new gear before you venture into the ocean (Photo C Micallef)

Bass Strait Snapper

I have had reports of a few good-sized Snapper caught on the shipwrecks outside Port Lonsdale. Hopefully these large fish will enter Port Phillip heads so you can all have a crack at them. These seem to be new fish that have just entered this area.

l have had good success on strips of Salmon caught from the Rip prior to heading out and fishing for the Snapper.

National 4x4 & Outdoors Show, Fishing & Boating Expo Melbourne 2012

Exhibitions & Trade Fairs, organisers of the National 4x4 & Outdoors Show, Fishing & Boating Expo Melbourne 2012, wishes to advise a change of dates for the 2012 Melbourne event.
The Melbourne Showgrounds venue will still remain the same.
The new dates are 24th – 26th August, 2012.
The decision to move dates has been made as a result of exhibitor and visitor feedback from the previous two events. Benefits of moving to the weekend of 24th – 26th August as follows;
• No longer clashing with the opening of the Spring Racing Carnival at Flemington Racecourse. This will ease traffic congestion on the roads and the parking issues we’ve experienced during the previous 3 shows.
• Access to 4000 additional visitor parking spaces at Flemington Racecourse.
• No longer falling on the opening weekend of the Victorian Trout Season. This enables us to grow the Fly Fishing section of the Fishing & Boating Expo and attract the trout fishing enthusiasts who would normally not attend.
• No longer falls on Father’s Day Weekend, allowing exhibitors to spend time with their families.
• Does not clash with the 2012 Brisbane Boat Show, as they have announced a change of dates to the Fathers Day Weekend.
• Great timing which helps maximise your sales, outside of current published dates for other major exhibitions
Together on the 24th – 26th August, we’ll put on the best show our industry has ever seen, so make sure you exhibit at the National 4x4 & Outdoors Show, Fishing & Boating Expo - Melbourne 2012.
Remember your presence not only rewards your customer’s for their loyalty, but reinforces your position as an innovator within your industry.
If you have any questions regarding the new 2012 show dates, please don’t hesitate to contact myself on 07 5508 7302 or email pmorgan@etf.com.au

Frankston Safe Harbour still on the agenda

So what’s happening with Frankston Safe Harbour these days? Well, while some progress is still being made, the effects of the global financial crisis have taken their toll on the project.

Back in March 2010 the Frankston City Council determined to terminate the Stage 1 tender process due to the absence of any conforming tenders, with a view to going back to the market in 12 -18 months when market conditions improved.
In the meantime the council resolved to pursue funding from the State Government for public infrastructure works as well as clarification of Native Title requirements through preparation of a Cultural Heritage Management Plan for the site.

Since then Positive outcomes have been achieved with both these issues - the State Government has accepted responsibility for funding of Olivers Hill Slope Stabilisation works and the regional public boat launching facilities to be included within the Harbour. ??

Also a Cultural Heritage Management Plan for the site has been completed and native title discussions are well advanced with local indigenous representatives.

During the second quarter of 2011, Council has conducted an assessment of current market conditions with emphasis on how these are impacting the marina industry around Australia. They held discussions with industry groups, developers and operators in the industry as well as consultants familiar with economic conditions affecting the marina market.
Nothing better than cooking fresh Calamari (Photo C Micallef)

The results of this showed that whilst some improvement in market conditions has occurred over the last 18 months, the level of improvement to date is insufficient to allow Council to return to the market, confident of receiving a strong range of competitive tenders.

Accordingly, Frankston City Council has resolved to leave the project on hold for the balance of 2011, pending re-assessment of market conditions in early 2012 to ascertain whether improvement in conditions is sufficient to allow Council to re-tender the project in 2012.
