 | | FIRST TROUT! Canberrans Petra and Adrain Lejins found out just how good the fishing can be in the snowies. |
Rob's weekly fishing southern NSW report 0716 written for the week of Wednesday 22/8/2012
I ran a picture earlier this year of Adrain and Petra Lejins with their first trout-a typical Brown Trout from Lake Jindabyne, caught right next to the township in fact.
Many people still comment on this size and quality of the fish in this photo and often think it is the domain of experienced anglers-not true. This was Adrian and Petras very first attempt at any sort of fishing!
But a little know how made all the difference. Because I worked as a trout fishing guide in this region for many years I have the hindsight of knowing where people go wrong. So I showed Adrian and Petra what not to do along with some must know essentials, and from there they had a flying start. They did the rest all on their own!
Besides a few more Brown Trout they also caught a good number of Rainbow Trout and had an absolute ball. On this same trip there were 8 kids and three adults I used as test cases to illustrate how easy it can be with the right advice; they all had a blast reeling in these hard fighting fish and brought home trout for dinner to boot! These fish are much fresher than the master chef team will pick up from any shop; and if you haven’t tried one for you self betcha you can taste the difference!
It is fishing and experiences like this that many people drive past mostly because they don’t know where to start, or have already had a crack and were unsuccessful. This need not be the case for absolutely anyone.
Trout are stocked in our region in our waters in huge numbers by NSW fisheries so that anglers can enjoy catching them and cook up a brilliant feed at the end of the day!
Furthermore there over 100 kilometers of easily accessible shorelines right around our two major lakes Jindabyne and Eucumbene. You can fish near townships, camps or cabins, or go further afield if you like peace and quite. There is also Tantangara, Jounama, Pejar and many more lakes that fish well, and all are reachable within a day or weekend trip.
While showing Adrian, Petra and the rest of the group the easiest and cheapest ways to catch trout in our local lakes, I actually filmed it as part of an Instructional DVD so everybody can see for themselves just how simple and accessible this sort of fishing is.
The participants now have a skill for life, and can pretty much catch fresh trout whenever they need, and the DVD will help many more people achieve the same.
The DVD was supported by Snowy Hydro, Tourism Snowy Mountains and NSW DPI who are keen to see people take advantage of this healthy past time and valuable resource.
A lot of late nights working with local industry experts has seen this DVD now available just in time for fathers day, see www.robpax.com . In the DVD you will see Adrian, Petra and many more locals from schools around the region learn the ropes and in the process you will guarantee yourself some fresh trout. Enjoy what’s right at our feet!
Rockfishing; Safety Comes First.
*
On the back of three more recent drownings off the rocks the Recreational Fishing Alliance of NSW is urging anglers who fish the rocks to be more vigilant.
Some basic safety tips include: Read the weather forecasts and heed any warnings issued. Make a careful judgment as to whether your fishing spot is safe, taking into account the swell direction, the tide height, the strength of the wind and the height and orientation of the rock platform. Decide what sort of footwear is needed to keep you from being swept off your feet. Choose appropriate clothing for the day, including a life jacket. Try not to fish alone. If in doubt, get out!
