Corio Bay Snapper
Cameron Orlov had just bought a new rod and reel on which he was hoping to catch his first Corio Bay Snapper, a hope that was realized after making an early start off Clifton Springs with companion Aaron Feldman.

All was quiet until around 6.45 am when – after considering a move to get away from the flathead that were taking their baits – Cameron’s rod wrapped over, his reel screaming to the tune of a Snapper that later measured 95 cm and weighed just over 9 kg.

Fishing in much the same area on Sunday was Bruce Lee who also bagged a 9 kg Snapper on his first try for the reds in six months or so and who was kind enough to hold it up for a photo.

With fine weather Mark Stewart, along with progeny Jordyn and Kordell, both 9, Hanna 7, Bree 4 and Rhyanni 2, also took a run out on Corio Bay. Naturally they took their fishing gear and Kordell and Jordyn each caught a Snapper .

On Sunday morning, Murray Scott, Alex Andjelkovic and Bruce McCoy launched at the Avalon boat ramp and headed over to the west side of the Wilson Spit where they too caught three good size Snapper.

Offshore
On Sunday morning Brad Andrews, along with Bianca, Jarrod and Kevin Messinger, headed out into 48 metres of water off Barwon Heads where they fished on the drift for a catch of five Snapper to 4.5 kg, several good size flathead to a kilogram or so and a Gummy Shark of about 5 kg.

Fishing anchor in 40 metres of water off Barwon Heads on Sunday morning was Norman Ratajcak with a similar catch of Snapper and flathead that included a Tiger Flathead of about 2 kg, and of which – along with the Snapper – Norman sent in a photo.

Freshwater
On Sunday, fifteen members of the Petrel Angling Club contested the Northern Suburbs Concrete Trophy at Camperdown where Lake Purrumbete provided all fish taken: Heaviest was a 412 gram redfin taken by Paul Mann who also took the heaviest bag of fish, all redfin, at 2.3 kg. Second heaviest fish, a 251 gram redfin, was taken by Rod Armstrong.

Marie of the Lake Purrumbete Caravan Park reports that pickings were lean on the lake over the weekend with very little being caught, the last good catches being taken early last week when Donna and Andrew Kompa of Werribee caught five Brown Trout to 2 kg.

Kordell and Jordyn Stewart both 9, with their snapper from Corio Bay.

Doug Lucas reports that his sometime fishing companion Wayne Dunn of Ballarat spent a couple of hours from midnight onward, walking a mudeye slowly back and forth along the Jetty at Lake Wendouree an exercise for which he was rewarded with several Rainbow Trout, the biggest 1.5 kg.

Doug also reports that although the Curdies at Peterborough remains heavily discoloured it continues to produce respectable bream to knowledgeable folk like Robert Andrews who, last Thursday, caught a good bag of fish to 35 cm at the island above the lake using shrimp for bait.

Portland
Down Portland way, Bob McPherson reports that Snapper are beginning to turn up in anglers' catches from the Lee Breakwater and sent through a photo of local angler John Cross with a good one of around 7 kg.

Bob also reports that good weather over the weekend encouraged anglers offshore; among them Geoff Sturzaker who took a good catch of whiting averaging around the 700 gram mark in 13 metres of water off Portland’s north shore.

Also adding to the excitement out there were some large Barracouta taking an unhealthy interest in proceedings.

Some of those making the journey to Cape Nelson in around 70 metres of water were rewarded with School Shark, with fish in excess of 20 kg being brought to the cleaning tables, said Bob.

Heath asks:
I have started fishing St Helens land based for Snapper, and was wondering if suitable bait can be caught from the rocks?

Heath; garfish can sometimes be caught from the rocks at St Helens in calm conditions but there’s not been many caught there lately.

Flathead, the fillets of which are also good bait for Snapper, have become an increased possibility from the rocks with the rising water temperatures. You may catch one or two by casting out a line baited with bluebait or a slice of pilchard, then retrieving it very slowly. However, I would be taking some packaged bait with me just in case I couldn't catch anything.
