Annual Snowy Mountains Trout Festival All Set To Go
Anglers are hoping for favourable weather and good fishing for the 39th annual Snowy Mountains Trout Festival being staged next week. The event is the most prestigious in the annual trout fishing competition calendar and usually attracts a big crowd. It starts on Saturday 3 November and ends on Friday 9 November. Top prize will be a Quintrex boat, motor and trailer package worth $8500, awarded as a lucky ticket prize. Second prize will be a $3000 Hobie kayak. In addition there will be many daily and weekly prizes of cash and beer glasses for the heaviest fish caught on fly, lure or bait by individuals or groups.
The final weigh-in will be at 10a.m on Friday morning and the prize giving will be held at the Berridale Community Hall at 2p.m. on the same day. Ticket holders must be present in order to claim prizes, including the boat and kayak.

What To Use
Bait anglers fishing the Festival should fare well with a mixture of Power Bait, Gulp, Trout Bait, bardi grubs and scrub worms fished with a light running sinker reasonably close to shore. The artificial baits maximise the chances of catching rainbows and the bardi grubs and scrub worms are better for browns. Anglers are allowed two rods, each fitted with two hooks, which enables a range of baits to be used simultaneously.
Bank anglers using lures should try a range of Tasmanian Devils, especially my Y82 Canberra Killer pattern, Wonder spoon, medium to large Celtas, Insects and Mepps and small to medium minnows. Trollers should try the same patterns but with the emphasis on larger minnows and classic favourites such as Heddon Tiny Tad, Burrinjuck Specials, Strike Pro Hunchback and flatfish. Lead core line, especially from mid-morning onwards, is highly recommended. Try two colours with different lures, then three and finally five to cover the depths properly.
Fly anglers should concentrate on larger wets such as Woolly Worm and Woolly Bugger, with bead head nymphs, during the
day. If fishing dry try Stimulators, Royal Coachman, Humpy, Muddler Minnow and midge balls and keep an Elk Hair caddis handy in case there is a sudden hatch. At night switch to Craigs Nightime. Mrs Simpson, Hamills Killer and Western mudeye.

Big Redfin, Bigger Goldens
The local lakes continue to puzzle anglers on where to fish and what to use but some have done well through simple chuck-it-and-chance-it fishing. Regular Lake Burley Griffin trier Dusan landed some large redfin and two massive Golden Perch, each weighing 3.5-4.0kg on lures near the Australian Museum. Nine-years old Tyson Munro also landed a prize catch, with grandad Les, of a large redfin and two small Golden Perch, on scrub worms.
In Lake Ginninderra Mick Maher landed a redfin estimated at more than 1.5kg on a lure and another angler worked the bank near the fast food restuarants with lures for a big Golden Perch and some large redfin.
In Lake Tuggeranong some large redfin came from under the Soward Way road bridge and two large Golden Perch were taken on bibless minnows near the spillway.

Coast Quiet
At the coast poor weather meant mostly poor fishing. The Bega River yielded only small bream and trevally and one bass. At Tuross one group landed only three legal-sized bream out of a catch of 30, and just managed a feed of smallish flathead for the barbecue.
Tathra Wharf had the best action when a heap of Barracouta descended on a school of pilchards and created mayhem for three or four hours.
