| SOUTH COAST SURF
Some much needed rain run off hit the south coast last week triggering some of the runs of fish expected at this time of year.
There is some good Australian Salmon and Tailor to be had, best time to fish two hours before high tide. Best technique is to berley with pilchard cubes and then use the same for bait. This is a better all round bet than a pilchard on a gang hook as you have more chance of snaring other species such as Dusky Flathead and Black Bream, and bream time it is read on:
Silver ttevally or whatever you want to call them, are the ones that school in the surf around this time of year to breed. They are in good numbers at the moment, and in some places the average fish is over a kilo. Try rocky beach corners using a pilchard cube on a running sinker rig. If you go to the trouble of collecting beach worms the you will get even more bream plus big Sand Whiting and the odd school Mulloway. Salmon and Tailor also adore beach worms so if you've got a little time up your sleeve then "go a wormin first" and you'll be in pole position when it comes to the fishing.
SOUTH COAST BLUE WATER
A few Yellowfin Tuna have turned up as expected at this time of year, but don't start organising your big game gear just yet as the numbers of fin are not yet good enough to warrant targeting them. A better bet is to go light tackle fishing for Albacore, Striped Tuna and sharks, and if your lucky enough to see some yellowfin then consider yourself privileged!
SNOWY MOUNTAINS
I've been testing out the new 4.8 litre petrol Nissan ST patrol courtesy of Lennock motors in Phillip ACT. Power and class springs to mind, they are great for towing boats and big crews of anglers, but are also fun to drive around town as they handle more like a sports car than a big 4wd!
Of course the Nissans off road ability is renowned, so I had to see how it went around the rough tracks in the Snowy's. In the name of research I went looking for the best trout activity on an extended trip and the vehicle performed exceptionally as you would expect from the 4WD of the year. This is very handy because the best fishing can be found by taking a cruise too study the more inaccessible water.
At Jindabyne shallow bays with weeds beds are the go and even more to the point look for the ones that have good midge or other insect hatches. The fish do not have to be rising but have no doubt they will be feeding below. The trout in these areas were mostly Brown Trout, they responded to midge flies but also to Tom Jones in size 8. These trout were not so selective yet that they will refuse a lure, best lure was a storm thunder crank colour 274 (bleeding gold) which imitates the goldfish in the lake, which also feed in the same areas.
In one particular hour long hatch, two mates hooked three browns each around the 3 to 4 pound mark using flies, and I scored one about 2 pounds and jumped another 3 off using lures. This all happened in a 50 meter stretch of shoreline. What fun!
This week on the Fishing Australia program amongst other things we fish the tropics with a few Wallaby well knowns, in what is one of the best shows of the year.
Fishing Australia screens each Saturday at 5pm on the WIN Television Network and before the season ends in six weeks I must take the opportunity to recognise some of the unsung heroes of the program the road crew.
Cameraman Dave Henderson slings that heavy camera all day rain hail or shine rolling on all the action and still manages create new moves on the dance floors at night. Our soundmen Stein Parrot, Ronny McLoughlin, and Russel Moore somehow avoid seasickness even when their ears are blocked by the headsets. And producer Chris Papakosmas 'somehow' manages to keep us all under control while putting together shows that are rating superbly. Thanks guys.
Until Next week, see you on the water!

Editors NB: For Newcastle and surrounding regions, the NBN network also screens Fishing Australia at 5pm each Saturday.
