SOUTH COAST ESTUARY
 | | Golden perch can be aggressive in May. | Well what a week it has been for soft plastic tossers who have been inundating me with reports of catches of bream on those wiggly soft things. I think it annoys me the most that I haven't had a chance to use them lately on the breamos. Best technique has been a slow roll along rock ledges and oyster leases, best colours have been fire shad, white, and strangely enough perch colours. Until I get a chance to do some more soft work myself I've set up my e-mail to ban any in coming reports with the word soft plastic in it. Sneaky in coming e-mails with abbreviations of the term will only serve to upset me even more.
CANBERRA LAKES
Out at Googong, there has been a few Golden Perch to be had and while there is plenty of long periods where the fish shut down, when they bite they have been quite aggressive-classic May perch behaviour. Trollers have reported several triple hookups, and those off the banks have been faring well also.
Best technique has been to walk the more remote banks, especially those north facing warm water shallow points that perch look for at this time of year. Use a medium depth diving lure and wiggle it slowly near bottom with plenty of brief pauses to let it float clear of the weed. Of course jiggling the lure for a minute of so if it becomes fouled also pulls the odd fish as I have detailed in this column before.
There are also a few redfin ( English Perch) about, the odd trout, and of course for the die hards some goodoo can be found sniffing around the feed alleys and snags.
SNOWY MOUNTAINS
Fly anglers after the magic double figure Brown Trout have been doing OK at the mouth of the Eucumbene River at night. You will need some seriously warm clothing to check this out plus a big sense of humour-this is either extra hard core or slightly insane fishing!
There has been a number of fish over the magic 10 pound mark reported, and plenty more in the solid 4 to 7 8 pound bracket. Best technique is to use a large wet fly, usually with plenty of black coloration eg a red and black rabbit fur fly as perfected by Col Sinclair at the Adaminaby Angler.
Flies like this are is cast out into the old river bed and then retrieved in slow short strips. A slow sinking intermediate line is a big help as the wind does not bow the line as much.
Watch out for anyone attempting to use soft plastics in this scenario. Most fly anglers have agreed that this is taking the soft plastic craze too far and perpetrators will be penalised bank side.
On a seriuos note, please be wary of the holes when wading at night, as a fall into the lake at this time of year could prove deadly.
2003 FISHING SHOW AND OUTDOORS EXPO
Earlier this year I wrote about the national 2003 Fishing Show and Outdoors expo sponsored in principal by outboard giant Mercury Marine. Thanks to those readers who wrote in saying they enjoyed the show (and the free ticket give aways no doubt). The good news is the show is also going to Brisbane June 2-4 at the RNA Exhibition Grounds, Fortitude Valley and also to Melbourne on October 23rd to 25th at the Melbourne Exhibition centre. More up dates on the shows as they come to hand, and no doubt there will be even more of the latest fishing and boating gear on display to delight and entertain the public. Well worth attending if your after some new gear or ideas.
The fishing industry in Canberra, Snowy Mountains and South Coast regions will also be represented at the show by various local tour operators.
Until next week, see you on the water
