TROUT RIVERS AND STREAM CLOSE

At midnight on Monday the 13th of June the declared trout rivers and streams in NSW and ACT close. They re-open again on the long weekend in October. The closed season allows the trout to spawn without interruption from anglers. To check exactly which rivers and streams close you must obtain a current copy of the rules either from your local tackle shop or check on the web. Fines for fishing closed waters can be hefty, and it is the anglers responsibility to know the rules and any changes that may have occurred since they last checked the rule book. Impoundment's such as Lake Jindabyne and Eucumbene and many others remain open all year to trout fishing.

Speaking of Lakes, the fishing is continuing to be the best in decades. Earlier this week Alec Berry and friends from the BP 4 mile at Cooma fished 7 gates at Eucumbene between 4:30pm and 11:00pm. They landed eight Rainbow Trout and lost three. The ones landed averaged about a kilo.

Alec used frozen bardi grub and power bait on the same hook. Alec swears by a bit of ultrabite splashed on the bait. When used in conjunction with a running sinker rig and a small hook (between size 8 and 12) the grub/power bait floats about a meter off the bottom. This keeps the bait out of the weed and up away from bait stealing yabbies!
COLD CATCH: Craig Kolstad with a prime winter rainbow trout caught at Lake Eucumbene earlier this week.

Most importantly Alex uses a quiver tip rod. This allows the trout to take the bait with only a slight bit of tension. Alternatively, you can fish your bait with a meter of slack in the line. Either way keep a keen eye out for any nibbles because sometimes the trout just play with the bait, in which case fishing a tight line, especially on a stiff rod, will often see the trout drop the bait or steal the grub.

Trollers are also doing well. I had a quick troll with Mark Fountain of Eucumbene Charters from 8 am to 10 am earlier this week. We trolled in the Old Adaminaby area using two lead core lines and two flat lines, both with cobra style lures. The lead lines scored all the hits and from these we caught two Rainbow Trout and a Brown Trout. The rainbows were in awesome condition, the biggest fish caught by Craig Kolstad, weighed 1.4 kilograms! We primarily trolled in 30 feet of water but occasionally went as deep as 45 feet.

Fly Fishing guide Col Sinclair from the Adaminaby Angler has also been getting a few trout, primarily using large wet flies like Mrs Simpsons and Woolly Buggers. Like many of the locals in the area Col will soon be turning his attention to the ski hire trade, but is still available for the occasional trout trip should you wish to escape the ski bunny crowd and chill out by the lake.

SOUTH COAST REEFS

On the reefs there has been some good Snapper getting about. Drifting will find the schools, but if you want to catch more or bigger fish then it is best to anchor up and burley. Best baits are cuttlefish, octopus, squid, slimy mackerel and pilchard. Best Burley is any oily fish such as pilchards, tuna, carp etc. Spots to try include the reefs of Ulladulla, Durras, Batemans Bay, Narooma, Long Point (Merimbula) and Mowarry (Eden) just to name a few.

SOUTH COAST BEACHES

There is some good salmon to be caught along the beaches. Experienced lure anglers are getting a few on metal lures and soft plastics, however bait is by far the most reliable technique at the moment. Dawn to about mid morning is the go this weekend because there is an in coming tide at this time. Check your local tide chart if you need more exact details at your chosen fishing destination.

Best baits include pilchard, tuna strips, white bait, carp strips, pippies, cuttlefish and slimy mackerel just to name a few. Spots to try are the beaches just south of Ulladulla, at Bawley Point, Brou Lee, Moruya, Tuross, Narooma, and Tura Beach (Merimbula) just to name a few.

Until next week, see you on the water.
