Autumn is here, beautiful crisp mornings and calm seas, my favourite time to be on the water. So let’s do the rounds...
Over in the east Scottie from ‘Bermagui Bait and Tackle’ is having a great time catching large Kingfish. I spoke to him on the phone a few days ago while he was locked into a mighty Kingfish. Many fish were around ten kilo. Scottie also informs me that Yellowfin Tuna are also starting to be caught in these waters. Over in the west Southern Bluefin Tuna are also starting to play the game. With Kingfish and Southern Bluefin Tuna being caught now, it looks as though it is going to be a great few months.

Charlie Micallef Marine Media
In this edition of Charlie Micallef Marine Media we fish local waters for small Gummy Sharks and Squid. We then take our catch to the Rye Hotel where it is cooked up for us by Nathan the chef. Haines Hunter launched a few new products at their V.I.P. night and we were lucky enough to have the cameras there, where we talked to a few of their guests. This also included the official launch of the Haines Hunter Club. If you own a Haines Hunter, join up and take advantage of the benefits.
Glenn Greene
Well what a weekend it was for the Haines Hunter Club boys last weekend in Portland.
We took up 4 boats for the weekend , It was a 3.5m swell on Saturday morning with a 15 knot breeze on top off it. Hence to say it took a while to get out on the shelf.
We were running a mixture of lures from Black Magic to Williamson to Blue Dog Lure by Craig Watson. We did run the odd Killer Vib in the prop wash as well with good results.
The Lures that were doing most of the damage were Fluro Green. By lunch time Saturday most of us were well and truely on our way to Bagging out on both Tuna and Albacore.
We ended up back in Portland Harbour later that afternoon to find standing room only at the ramp and having to take a ticket in line for a spot on the cleaning tables.
Sunday morning was a far better day with only a 3m swell and a 4 knot breeze. It was a short, comfortable ride to the shelf for our crew and before you knew it, we had lines screaming and rods buckling.
One of the boats in our crew were bagged out before lunch on both Albies and Tuna again. They fished in around the 400 – 600m mark due south of Lawrence rock, were were a little deeper and had plenty of action as well.
Most Tuna were around 20-25kg and the Albacore around the 15kg mark, although there was a few that were 20+kg.
We were lucky enought to have had Bob the Guru Mc Pherson fishing with us who was freshly of his 99 Barrell last weekend. A wealth of knockledge would be an understatement when it comes to Bob. Not to mention a pretty good bloke, its only a matter of time before Portland erect a Bronze Statue of him.

Mornington Pier to re-open in July
Mornington Pier’s upgrade project has been delayed by bad weather and difficult site conditions with the project now due for completion in July 2011.
Bays and Maritime, Chief Ranger Port Phillip Western Port, Graeme Davis explained working on the exposed site has been an on-going challenge for the project, originally due for completion in December 2010.
Mr Davis thanked the boating community, anglers and visitors to the area for their patience. “Our contractor is doing everything he can to safely manage this project but unfortunately
construction works since the site re-opened in February from the summer break has slowed due to wet weather and strong wind conditions.
“Our contractor has poured the first section of the three sectioned reinforced concrete deck, which is a promising step forward, but we are unable to meet the expected revised April completion date.”
“The new middle section of the pier will be finished with a timber deck – the last part of the $3.5 million upgrade of the pier,” Mr Davis said.
For public safety reasons the pier will continue to be closed until the upgrade is complete. Parks Victoria apologises for any inconvenience caused as a result of the delay.
For further information please contact the Parks Victoria information Centre on 13 1963.

Melbourne Boat Show - New dates for 2011
The Melbourne Boat Show is set to woo the public again this year at the Melbourne Conference and Exhibition Centre Queen’s birthday weekend 9 – 13 June, 2011.
This event is Melbourne’s iconic boat show held each year for the past 51 years. The 2011 venue, affectionately known as ‘Jeff’s Shed’ will house the latest and best boating and fishing gear for the public to view in one massive space.
This year’s show, for example, will see the Yamaha super tank and loads of fishing demonstrations, a huge array of boat displays, everything from inflatable craft, fishing and cruising boats to ski boats and wakeboarding.
A slice of history;Back in 1961, boat prices ranged from £30 to £6,000 (or $60 to $12,000 in dollars – although not in today’s dollars). Venue was the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton Gardens. Ads in the Herald Sun promoted the show as “the ideal family outing”.
The Show opened from 11am to 10pm daily for 11 days. Boating trends in the early days included deep vee hulls and fibreglass dominating by the mid 1960s and beginning a trend which has continued ever since.
By the mid 1970s the fashionable trim colours included pale purple and burnt green, and a 14-foot runabout with trailer and 60 hp outboard cost just under $3,000. In 1978 BIA Victoria bought the show from Riddell Exhibitions Promotions Pty Ltd. In 1996 the Show moved into the brand new Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
Last year’s popular floor plan is back for easy navigation of the Show, The giant hall is laid out for easy navigation by visitors so they can find exactly what they are looking for.
Accessory Alley is back again, literally by popular demand and even bigger. People loved it last year, it’s right there first thing when you walk in the door. Loads of fishing gear, boats, fish finders, rods, tackle, the works.
Wake and Ski boats more than ever, several new models and new brands plus all sorts of accessories. Marine Tourism for information and destinations to make the most of enjoying life on the water. Government agencies including Marine Safety Victoria (TSV) and Parks Victoria, NSW Maritime – “Here to help you!”
There'll be plenty of special attractions for the whole family including Flathead Fred’s Fun Fishin’ Show for Kids, Lulu Kids’ Activities to keep the kids occupied and the Yahama Super (fish) Tank.
