With trout fishing all finished for me it's now time to turn to Melbourne's land based, saltwater species. With a north wind forecast for the coming days and Rye Pier's position, that was the destination to target Southern Sea Garfish and Southern Calamari Squid and a big one, hopefully. Arrived Wednesday on the pier two hours before sun-set all other anglers jigging for squid. Set myself up then berleyd for gars and jigged for squid. Nothing caught by night-fall and everyone else was gone, pier to myself. Caught three squid all around 40cm on a Yo-Zuri 1LL # R1-8 jig. Gars showed up in the lit water and in the berley trail but then so too did Sammy The Seal and experienced him knocking off a Barracouta the same length as him, which I'll never forget. Stayed till 2am but nothing, just Sammy and I. Returned Thursday morning right on day-break another three Squid of the same size caught and one dropped. Then the locals turned up and began catching pencil sized gars which I gave a wide berth. Returned to the pier Thursday, again two hours before sun-set, for only one very small squid which I gave away then headed for home. |
