THE ADVENTURES OF T-DOGG AND STINGA
We must have missed the memo, apparently its winter. We just got a little confused by all the fish still hitting the deck and the beautiful sunny days.
This Long weekend T-dogg celebrated his 5 year anniversary with his lovely girlfriend and expecting diamonds, she got one better, fresh fish.
Sunday
The fishing off Sorrento was as good as it’s been all year, the morning rainbows under a light drizzle led us to a pot of gold, that gold being Calamari. Little orange jigs again proving too tempting for some lovely table sized calamari and a debate soon arose over whether they would see the barbeque or the end of a hook. Much to the old mans disappointment the hooks won and we pulled up next to Mud Island to soak a few baits. Chasing gummies we were very impressed when a school of beautiful pale winter Snapper came through and we landed them to 3kg. Soon after something screamed off on the charter special with such force it snapped the rod in half & T-dogg had a hell of a time pulling up what was to be a 50kg+ 7 gill shark.
Monday
Point Leo
Tyabb Bank is still holding some huge squid caught drifting over the weed banks but it’s not all take, take, and take for us. Stingas donated $100's of dollars worth of squid jigs by snagging them on the weed beds just to say thanks. After some mighty fine squiding it was off to Point Leo, before long Stinga was battling another 7 giller, we dragged this one into the boat for a few snaps and put it back. It’s been hard to keep fresh baits in the water at the moment with the draught board shark plague arriving.
Tuesday
Flinders
Westernport was as flat as it’s ever been this morning and we were off to flinders for more squiding, it was a shame to spoil the glass like waters and as the sun rose behind us it was great to be on the water, all we needed was some theme music and slow motion playback. Running short on squid jigs an old orange jig was doing the trick and we were onto some real line peelers. Setting the drag right as Jig numbers were running on empty these squid were peeling some serious line. After a solid 3 days fishing we solved all the worlds’ issues and covered every hypothetical imaginable and had a nice bag of calamari to go with it.
FISHING REPORTS:
SURF REPORTS:
VENUS BAY:
We had a customer in on Thursday telling us about his recent trip down to Venus Bay fishing for salmon in the surf. His mate caught a massive salmon that weighed 4.8kg and went 77cm long. That’s all the information we have at the moment but he said he will bring in a photo with all the info to go with it, so hopefully next week we have a picture of this mini torpedo.
McLOUGHLINS BEACH
Staff members Scott Harper, Jaymie Deboucherville and Wazza heard the rumors that there were big salmon patrolling the gutters off McLoughlins recently. Arming themselves Arma Anchovy slugs, the boys didn’t take long to find the fish in some nice gutters formed only 20m off the beach. Most fish were 2 – 2.5 kilo and they managed 24 fish in just under 3 hours.
WESTERNPORT:
COWES:
Lawrence Duca fished out from Cowes on Sunday with the family and had a ripper day out on the water landing a nice Snapper weighing 4kg.
CORINELLA:
Reasonable gummies to 7kg have been caught this week with cured eel and fresh squid proving to be best baits. Along with the gummies there have been plague numbers of 7gill sharks which are always keen to take a bait intended for something else. Mixed in with the sharks good pinkies to 2kg have been caught on half pilchards and squid baits.
MIDDLE SPIT:
Regular customer Bryce Johnston fished the middle spit with his mate and between the 2 of them they landed 26 whiting with the best going 41cms. Best bait were shucked mussel and pipi. They moved about 6 times to get there bag of fish and Bryce said moving every 30 minutes once the bite had slowed was the key for them to keep catching fish.
TYABB BANK:
Gawaine Blake, Richard Greven from Big Time Charters fished with a couple of mates and Frogleys Rep Andy Smith during the week and boy did they catch some squid. Fishing the Tyabb Bank drifting in 1.5m – 3.5m casting a range of Mega Bass jigs they landed some ripper squid. The new Mega Bass Dart Crew UDSL 3.5 jigs, with the extra wide darting action definitely did the trick in tough conditions.
CAT BAY:
Luke Mellor fished last Monday with his dad and brother chasing whiting in Cat Bay. It took about 20 minutes for them to come on the bite and Luke reports they were smashing the baits. They were all thumpers between 42 and 47cm and they were thick. They were all caught on squid flaps that Luke caught a few trips ago. Well done guys!
PORT PHILLIP BAY:
SORRENTO: (bait collecting)
Leonie Slaninka sent us a picture of a massive 7gill shark that was caught in Westernport on Sunday. The fish weighed 50kg+ and was caught on a fresh salmon strip that the boys caught on first light the same day off Sorrento.
MORNINGTON PENINSULA:
Charlie Micallef reports there are some big calamari moving into the bay and settling on the weed beds from Rye to Blairgowrie. Using Clicks squid jigs in the pink and blue colors, Charlie and Jay Furniss managed some great size calamari in a lead up to what is promising to be an awesome winter squid season.
PATTERSTON RIVER:
The Patto is still firing with excellent bream caught in both the river and lake system. Bait anglers have been doing well using freshwater yabbies and scrubworms fished on lightly weighted rigs. The lure anglers have been having a ball casting vibes and soft plastics in the deeper water and working them back slowly. A few salmon to 600grams have been caught at the mouth casting metal slugs and atomic jerk minnows.
FRESHWATER:
LAKE BULLEN MERRI:
Regular customer Jeff Chapman hit Bullen Merri on Tuesday. Trolling tassie devils on drop weight clips behind cowbells, he landed a couple of thumping trout including this big buck brownie that pulled the scales down to 3kg. The other fish included some nice rainbows which were around 1.5kg. All fish were caught on tassie devils fishing deep on drop weights.
LAKE EILDON:
FREE LURES TO THE FIRST 20 CUSTOMERS……
Using $800,000 of recreational fishing license revenue, Lake Eildon will be stocked with a million Murray Cod fingerlings over three years, commencing December 2010. To promote this project, Fisheries Victoria has kindly donated 20 customised Oar-Gee lures to Tackleworld Cranbourne to give away to customers wanting to fish the lake in the near future.
The lures promote the release of one million Murray Cod into Lake Eildon over three years - funded by your fishing license fees. To get your free lure, be one of the first 20 people to come into Tackleworld Cranbourne and simply tell us how many cod will be released during this project and you have yourself a lure.

Good customer Cane Gorsevski fished Lake Eildon last weekend and while fishing with worms for redfin, got a very pleasant and quite heavy tug on the line. After playing the fish for five minutes amongst the timber, he landed a beautiful Yellowbelly weighing 4.5kg. Nice catch Cane and thanks for the pic!
AROUND THE STATE:
PORT FAIRY:
Jordan Stannard from Warrnambool fished 200m inside the Port Fairy break wall last Monday where there is a great run of garfish at the moment. Using bread on an unweighted hook, Jordan managed his bag of gars and was taking them home for a good family feed.
PORTLAND:
Staff member David Kramer and Mornington Mazda’s Tony Groves fished with Wayne Sharrock last weekend in fairly rough conditions for Southern Bluefin Tuna. The boys worked hard for the fish and ended up just 500m from shore west of the lighthouse to land a few nice fish between 10 to 15 kilos. The fish were feeding on very small squid which made sense why most fish took Apex Predator Pop-Top skirts in the Casper color
Pandellis Dimitiou and his mates fished Portland last week for a nice bag of tuna all around Cape Bridgewater area in 60 – 70m of water. The fish were few and far between however over 4 hours the boys managed their bag limit and had loads of fun.

GIPPSLAND LAKES:
Paul Davidson from facebook posted a picture of a massive blue nose bream that weighed 1.9kg which he caught during the week. This beast previous topped his old personal best bream which use to be 1.745kg. Great fish mate and truly a fish of a lifetime.
INTER STATE:
ARNHEMLAND:
Staff member Jarrod headed north to Arnhemland last week with 14 customers. The boys all fished at the Arnhemland Barramundi Nature Lodge over three days. Jarrod reported that the fishing was the best we had ever experienced in Darwin with all 5 boats catching and releasing over 300 barra, countless numbers of Queenfish, Spanish Mackerel, Trevally, Mangrove Jack, Long Tail Tuna and plenty more.
If you’re keen on doing a trip into this remote region, check out the trip going in October below or drop in or call Jarrod to find out more.

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK:
With all the reports of salmon being reported from most of the beaches, spinning has also been effective. Most metal slug’s lures don’t often have a lot of action when retrieved. ARMA Twist metals are precision machine cut creating a specific design to allow the lure to imitate fleeing baitfish on the retrieve.
ARMA Twist Metals have been extremely effective on salmon in recent weeks.
Available in a range of sizes, they are a worthy accessory to everyone’s tackle box.
Check them out online at http://www.ifish.com.au/store/products.php?product=ARMA-Twist
USELESS INFORMATION:
Crocodiles and alligators are surprisingly fast on land. Although they are rapid, they are not agile; so if you ever find yourself chased by one, run in a zigzag line. You'll lose him or her every time
Good luck with your fishing and stay safe on the water,
Paul, Cristy, Jet, Mitch, Scott, Adam, Jarrod, David, Ray, Neil, Gary, Pete, Hans, John, Mark, Luke, Dave, Chris, Jamie and Rentlo.
