HOOKED! Trout of all shapes and sizes respond exceptionally well to this new lure fishing technique.

Rob’s weekly FISH’N’TIP 0654 written for the week of Wednesday 12/9/2012

Readers will need to follow this column for the next four weeks to appreciate the full gist of this 4 part special on this incredibly effective new lure fishing technique for trout.

My fascination with trout kicked off way back when I was in primary school, when after reading about them, I eventually convinced my dad and the local fisheries body to help me stock them in a local dam.

The first one I caught, a fit and fat 3 pound brown, absolutely carved up the small water way zipping left and right like a tuna on a short string-I can remember the sight and buzz like it was yesterday.

The event was the cause of a few more skipped classes, but heck it was writing about fishing that got me through English Exams in the first place!

Since that time I have been lucky enough to have fished extensively for trout across much of their range in Australia, and before my media career kicked off I specialized in guiding clients onto this species on bait, lure and fly. I found that in teaching others you can learn a lot just by being forced to explain why you do things a certain way.

A TIME OF PLENTY

The benefits of the drought breaking are now being fully realized by freshwater anglers across much of the southern half of Australia.

Trout are growing big and fat in double quick time as they gorge themselves on the flooded margins that are loaded with food. It is a time of plenty - know what to do and the fishing is awesome.

In recent times I have been involved in presenting a series of seminars on lure fishing for trout across NSW, VIC, ACT and Tasmania, and in talking lots of fishos along the way I realized that some of the skills I have refined over the years are not as widely understood as I thought.

Now of course I don’t know everything about every scenario, which is half the fun, but I have a some cheeky and different approaches up my sleeve that help me win the bets on many occasions.

IMPARTING ENERGY TO A LURE-WHEN WHERE AND HOW MUCH!

Knowing how much energy to give your lure when you twitch it is extremely important to understand, and the right amount varies immensely depending on the scenario.

For a start consider the case of trolling four identical hard bodies shallow running minnows the usual 75 meters, behind your typical boat.

Place three of the rods in the holder, and thump just one of them with some solid ‘barra trolling’ like cracks, and you will find in the long run that the ‘cracked’ lure will catch more than the other three lures combined!

This is because in deeper lake edges where most trolling is done, the lure that sends out the most pulse will attract trout from further away.

The fishes lateral line is like their ears, it’s what makes them tick day and night, it can sense vibration long before they track down and see what is causing it, the bigger the vibration the further away they will ‘hear it’.

Not only can you cover more water with a properly ‘cracked’ lure, you will also automatically hook the shyer fish that are just mouthing the lure to see what it is.

And I’m talking about really cracking that lure strongly too-you will need to hold the rod so it is pointing back along the line, and then send a short but violent pulse down the line almost as hard you possibly can! The lure needs to be a quality one so that it doesn’t spin out or foul up.

Many a friend has thought the retrieve was way too aggressive until I hand them the rod to see how they enjoy pulling in the first trout of the morning! From there on everyone starts firing up-it might take a cup of strong coffee or some practice to get it right, but it’s worth it.

This technique is more like the way a good barra fisho can make a lure go ‘bang’ without moving it to far in that single ground shaking pulse.

I was mad keen to know why this works, so I set about doing some research which revealed exactly what is happening. More on this super effective new technique next week.
