The old adage "big bait, big fish" is true enough, but casting out a big bait from a surf beach has always been difficult. However, a gadget known as a "Uni-directional sliding clip" which was sent to me by renowned land-based angler Ian Vaughan, presently living in Perth WA, solves the problem.
 | | Diagram 1. | 1. The Uni-directional sliding clip replaces a conventional swivel or ring.
 | | Diagram 2 | 2. Having attached the leader and hook, the clip is undone and wound onto the line so it slides freely.
 | | Diagram 3. | 3. The clip is then secured and allowed to slide into the surf, leader and baited hook attached, where the wave action will take it all the way out to the sinker which may be 100 metres or more offshore.
 | | Diagram 4. | 4. Whenever an incoming wave catches the baited hook and pulls it back, the Uni-directional clip simply turns around, taking an angle bite on the line so that it cannot be washed back. When the wave recedes, the clip assumes its original position and goes out once more.
The Uni-directional sliding clip is presently available from Joe’s Fishing Tackle, 500 Charles Street, North Perth, WA, 6006. Fax and Phone 08 9201 0660. Email joefish@iprimus.com.au
