Fishing Background
Growing up within a few hundred metres of the Werribee River in Melbourne’s west, I developed a passion for angling at an early age, thanks largely to my father. Many weekends involved chasing redfin, trout and bream on live baits all throughout Victoria, but between road trips, my brother and I would spend endless hours on the banks of our home water.
While working part-time at a tackle store during the early nineties I became interested in coarse angling and spent five years competing in local competitions. Targeting roach, tench and carp using ultra-light lines, sensitive floats and tiny fine-wire hooks permanently instilled the importance of attention to detail in all styles of fishing.
In 2001, my wife and I bought an old Kombi Van and set off camping, surfing and fishing our way up the east coast of Australia. Along the way we picked up a small tinnie and began chasing estuarine species on lures, which ignited my enthusiasm for this style of fishing. Nowadays, most of my time is spent casting lures and soft plastics in search of snapper, silver trevally, Australian salmon, flathead and bream across the western shores of Port Phillip Bay and nearby tributaries.
Annual visits to New South Wales are also eagerly anticipated. Highlights include, my first mulloway on a soft plastic in just two metres of water, several large dusky flathead and some thrilling sessions pitching surface lures at chunky Australian salmon. Further north, Hervey Bay kingfish on poppers in the shallows off Fraser Island is another highlight that springs to mind. Landing a few Cook Island bonefish on soft plastics, however, while wading the crystal clear flats of Aitutaki Lagoon is my most memorable and satisfying experience to date.
Fishing Media
I began collecting fishing magazines at an early age and have never thrown an issue away. My first article was submitted to Provincial Publications in 2004, which fortunately made the front cover of South-West Fishing Magazine. I’ve since been supplying feature articles and local area reports to a range of magazines, including; Sport Fishing Australia, Victoria & Tasmania Fishing Monthly, South East & West Fishing Victoria, and more recently, Fishing World. I also prepare a regular online report titled ‘Port Phillip North & Beyond’ which is available at Fishnet.com.au
Been Fishing? If you’ve been fishing recently and would like to see your name and/or a picture of your catch published, please forward reports and images to blhodgey@hotmail.com. Any information based on the top end of Port Phillip Bay especially, would be much appreciated, but I'm also interested in reports from further afield. Lastly, if you would like to receive regular report updates via email, let me know and I’ll add your name to the distribution list.
