My First Fish on a Fly
By Tony Hickman

This is a true story. I caught my first fish on Boxing day last year.(98) My wife bought me the rod for Christmas. She didn't wrap it....she leaned it against the tree and said I couldn't use it till Christmas.....she knows how to torture a man. So....Boxing day came with a hangover and this story.

My First Fish on a Fly

I was at the "Onka"
Near the Aloe Vera plants
The tide was high
I had a good chance
I tried a "Mungo Shrimp"
Until my arm was sore
So I tried a "Pink Breath"
Till I could take no more

Then I tried a "Squid Thingy"
That I made myself
And slowly stripped it past
A shallow rock shelf
Then the rod bent over
And my heart started to pound
The fish went for a run
But I turned him around
He splashed on the surface
So I could see him
That's when I knew
I had me a Bream

But how do I bring him in
With this line all slack
I held the rod and line
And I just walked back
I got him on the bank
Man what a ride
Then I saw how I got him
I hooked him in the side
I had to put him back
I knew I oughta
So I took a picture for proof
And put him back in the water

Now was he really interested
In my home made fly
Or was he minding his own business
And just swimming by
He's still swimming around
While I feel like a fool
Only he knows the truth
And maybe the rest of his school

Now you know the story
And I have the proof
How can I call myself a fisherman
If I keep telling the truth!
