Tying Instructions
1) Slip on a silver conehead appropriate
to hook size and weight desired.
2) Tie in thread at hook bend.
3) Tie in marabou tail.
4) Tie in 5 -7 pieces of peacock herl (I like the bronze coloured
ones best).
5) Twist together to form rope and wrap rear half of hook shaft.
6) Now the fun part.
7) Tie in a clump of deer hair and tighten thread to flare hair
8) Now instead of the usual push to rear of hook and repeat.
9) Push spun hair up against conehead, thus pushing towards the
eye of hook.
10) A few wraps behind first clump of spun hair and tie in another
clump of deer hair, holding the first clump forward to keep out
of way of tying in the second clump of hair.
11) This is a little difficult first time (sometimes it takes
a few flies to get tightness of clumps right) but preserver it
is a very effective fly on Australian natives.
12) Three clumps usually enough, ensure last clump has the curve
of the deer hair upwards.
13) Tie off thread behind last clump of deer hair. This is a
little difficult made easy by practice.
14) Remove all deer hair from bottom of fly.
15) Trim deer hair to width of conehead, leaving only the deer
hair tip ends of the last clump on top of fly to form the collar. |

Fishing Notes
A varied retrieve, with stops is best. As always no hard and
fast rules, use a stripping method you are confident with.
Target species are Murray Cod & Yellowbelly. In smaller sizes
for Australian Bass. In the salt, Mulloway around bridge pylons.
I am sure Barramundi and other tropical species would be enticed
by this imitation too. |
Location Notes
Around structure, along the edge of horizontal logs it is dynamite.
A great night time fly as it pushes a lot of water and provides
a good silhouette from below. |
