Tying Instructions |
Fly Notes
Weighted versions same except on small
weighted version - lead dumbbells eyes with stick prism eyes
then epoxied instead of stemmed dolls eyes.
Large weighted version - lead wire wrapped around half of hook
closest to hook eye with large stemmed dolls eyes this to maintain
correct swimming action.
Floating versions substitute body materials for spun and clipped
deer hair.
Colour variations include pink, yellow and all tan. |
Fishing Notes
Target species include, Kingfish,
Snapper, Bream, Flathead, Australian Salmon & any species
that would eat a live squid. Depending on target species shock
tippets maybe required. Retrieval method is a stop, small strip
(1/2 - 1 meter), stop. Depending on tidal or current flow even
a dead drift will get results. Weighted versions are best left
to sink as far as possible before stop start stop retrieval to
surface.
First tied 7/0 size patterns when targeting large Kingfish at
the Port Augusta power station & Point Lowly 15mins north
of Whyalla. Score 27 flies to the Kingies & one four foot
Kingfish to me. Not a great ratio but lots of fun. Then used
3/0 - 1/0 sized patterns to target Whyalla's large Snapper, so
far only pan size Ssnapper to 4 kilo, but that 10+kilo is out
there somewhere. Berleyed up to the surface or fished deep Snapper
will readily take this fly. Salmon and Flathead have also readily
taken this fly. Developed from a US pattern of the same name.
Though mine doesn't look at all like the original it still catches
fish. |
Location Notes
Anywhere fish feed on squid. Floating
version best over weed & rocky shallow areas. Weighted version
is best for deep dwelling fish like Snapper & Kingfish around
structures, though a large floating version can really turn the
Kingies into eating mode. Intermediate versions fish right through
the water column. |
Prey Notes
