Booby Bugger

Tying Instructions

1. Place hook in vice and lay down a bed of thread from the eye to a point perpendicular to the barb.
2. Take a bunch of marabou fibres and tie in, making sure that all the fibres sit neatly on top of the hook shank and flare slightly.
3. Take 2 foam balls and a 2x2 cm square of panty hose, stretch panty hose square around both foam balls so that they are totally enclosed. I usually make a twist with the excess to ensure the foam balls don't come free.
4. Position foam balls by holding the panty hose (making sure they don't come loose) on hook shank in the same position that the marabou is tied in. Tie in by capturing the panty hose against the hook shank. The eyes can be separated by making a couple of carefully positioned cross wraps between the foam balls. Trim remaining panty hose.
5. Take black hackle (doesn't really need to be a good one a bit scraggy is ok) and tie in ensuring that the dull side is facing to the rear. (Doesn't always work for me but I don't get too stressed about it, the fish still like em.)
6. Tie in a piece of black chenille and wind forward to about 3mm behind the hook eye making sure that the wraps are close together but not on top of each other
7. Next take the hackle and palmer forwards over the body ensuring the hackle fibres slope back towards the tail. You will notice that mine don't, they tend to slope forwards, something that doesn't really bother me or the fish.

Fly Notes

Fishing Notes
This fly needs to be fished on a fast sinking line/shooting head with a shortish leader of around 1metre in length. Short jerky retrieves seem to give the fly the best action in the water. The foam eyes also keep the fly off the bottom thus helping to avoid snags, as well as keeping the fly out of the sometimes annoying weed. When retrieved, the fly dives down and then rises upwards on the pause creating a very seduction action indeed.
Targeted species, primarily Brown and Rainbow trout, but I couldn't see why it wouldn't work on deep holding Bass, Redfin or Golden Perch.

Location Notes
The booby bugger is largely based on the booby fly that is a highly successful fly at the river mouths in N.Z. When tying this fly I had deep holding trout in mind, old river beds in lakes etc, or probing deep snaggy area's. Fly can be tied in any combination of colors to suit local conditions, try larger and smaller foam balls to get different float rates for the fly.
