Brown Herl Bugger

Tying Instructions

1. Place hook in vice and lay down a bed of thread from the eye to a point perpendicular to the barb.
2. Take a bunch of marabou fibres and tie in, making sure that all the fibres sit neatly on top of the hook shank and flare slightly.
3. Take brown hackle (doesn't really need to be a good one a bit scraggy is ok) and tie in ensuring that the dull side is facing to the rear. (Doesn't always work for me but I don't get too stressed about it, the fish still like em.)
4. Take 2-3 strands of peacock herl and also tie in at this point, make sure that they sit close together and trim the tag ends which will be pointing forwards.
5. Tie in a piece of brown chenille and wind forward to about 3mm behind the hook eye making sure that the wraps are close together but not on top of each other
6. Take the peacock herl strands and pull forward over the chenille body to form a "back" and tie off.
7. Next take the hackle and palmer forwards over the body ensuring the hackle fibres slope back towards the tail. You will notice that mine don't, they tend to slope forwards, something that doesn't really bother me or the fish.

Fly Notes

Fishing Notes
Can be fished with either a floating line, sink tip or intermediate depending on the depth of water. Personally I prefer using the sink tip as I have found that it tends to get down to depth quicker and stays there through out the retrieve. I generally use a slow to medium draw retrieve of about 50cm lengths. Shorter quicker retrieves can also be used for variation.
Targeted species, brown and rainbow trout

Location Notes

Prey Notes

Great generalist pattern for trout but particularly effective when fished on the bottom as a yabbie pattern in lake Eucumbene. Clay beds are a great place to start with this pattern especially early morning or into the change of light on evening.
