Devils Leech

Tying Instructions

1) Wrap shank in thread
2) Tie in tail 3 clumps each one longer than the one below longest about 2/3 length of hook add a few strands of flash after 2nd clump ( can trim later to get it right).. Helps stop it fouling
3) Tie in yarn at hook eye, advance to tail, and secure , do not cut off.
4) Tie in lengths of hair to form the wing, you do this by getting a length 2 time the length you need, you then make a u shape and tie in at the bottom, make a turn of yarn over the thread fold the front arm of the "u" back over the tail and make another wrap of yarn, then secure yarn with minimal wraps of thread then repeat ( it takes some getting used to but eventually you will tie the wing twice as fast and more securely using this method)
5) When the wing reaches the hook eye tie in another few strands of flash with the last "u" of polar-aire. Whip finish.
6) A final trim with fingernails or scissors is often required to get the taper correct.

Fly Notes
Another from Australia's best trout flies as described by Brian McCullagh, the original calls for mohlon yarn and synthetic Tassie devil hair or wool. I had neither available so i used this polar-aire, and yarn. The polar-aire has an amazing quality to light up in the water a sort of brown olive colour, it seems to reflect inside the wing and out the ends. The original guy this fly comes from is an American called Doug Swisher, the instructions were rather confusing in the book , so this is the best I have been able to come up with. Apologies to Doug and Brian for any misrepresentation, but it does work well on both trout and bass.

Fishing Notes
Might want to shorten your leader to cast this if you are fishing light 4-5wt. After casting let it wash about a bit in the current or chop, then an erratic retrieve.
Target species include, Trout or bass.

Location Notes
Typical locations - lake edges, sunken trees, snags, and weed banks.

Prey Notes

Generalist, attractor,. Maybe a smelt or forage fish.

Tier
Grant Marshall
