Epoxy Smelt

Tying Instructions
1) Start the fly by tying in the marabou at the tail.
2) When you want to make the tail the right length, tear the marabou with your fingers, don't cut it.
3) Then make up an under body of wool to the shape of the bait fish body.
4) You then slide the mylar over the preformed body.
5) attach it at both ends with a few wraps of thread.
6) You will need to whip finish the tail end and start another tye in point at the head.
7) Then take the herl and line it up over the back and tail, you want the herl to go out the back just past the marabou.
8) Tie it in at the head and whip finish the head.
9) Now go back to the tail and tie in the herl at the back of the body and then whip finish again.
10) Apply a thin coat of epoxy to the body of the fly and keep it rotating until the fly is dry.
11) Put on the eyes and either cover them with another thin coat of epoxy or hit them with a little clear nail polish to seal them.

Fly Notes

Fishing Notes
Don't be to brave and go the light tippets as some nice fish can be encountered whilst smelting. When they are feeding they are usually not too far away from a nice thick weed bed or a drop off, so a reasonably short leader ( 2 meters ) of about 4 to 5 kilo should do the trick.
Target species is smelting trout.

Location Notes
Use the fly to fish lake edges when the trout are obviously smelting, and use a fairly sharp retrieve speed. Fishing to active smelters smashing bait can be like casting to feeding tuna.

Prey Notes
Flashy general baitfish pattern.
