Tying Instructions
1) Place hook in vice, if a weighted
fly is desired, cut a piece of lead tape to weigh down and give
shape to the body. Remove backing, fold over hook shank.
2) Cut a piece of holographic mylar to extend a little past hook
bend, remove core and tie down at front of hook, leaving room
for the head. Tie in several strands of blue crystal flash to
extend past hook bend (approx. Body length) for a tail. Remove
thread and re-attach at rear to lash down mylar/crystal flash
whip finish and remove thread.
3) Prepare epoxy and coat body, place on rotator, leave until
dry.
4) Cut a piece of blue zonker strip to extend past bend of hook,
tie in at head.
5) Tie in several strands of red crystal flash to imitate gills.
6) Form a head with thread, whip finish, and attach eyes.
7) Re-attach thread at rear of hook, pull zonker strip taught
and tie down, careful not to trap fur under wraps. Whip finish
and add a drop of head cement.
8) Mix another batch of epoxy to cover head, careful not to let
it run into gills. Add a drop of epoxy to cover thread at rear
where you've tied down the zonker strip. Place back on rotator
and allow to dry. |

Fishing Notes
Generally fished with a quick strip/pause
retrieve to imitate a bait fish. The zonker strip adds life to
the pattern and the holographic mylar/crystal flash gives it
an attractive flash the red crystal flash imitates the bait fish
gills.
This fly has accounted for many Ssteelhead (sea-going Rainbow
Trout) back in British Columbia, several Black Bream of up to
2.1 kilos and a few Coral Trout off the Albrolos Islands in W.A. |
Location Notes
Typical location details are backwater,
lake edges, rock platforms, open water, bridge pylons, sunken
trees. Timing of fishing effort (i.e. morning after noon). Structures
or water features to look for etc. |
Prey Notes
This is an adaptation of a popular
Steelhead pattern used back in my home of British Columbia but
dressed with green zonker/silver mylar & with the addition
of the gills. |
