Flathead Food Item
Baitfish Saltwater
Hook : No.4
Mustad Saltwater 34044NPSS.
Thread : No.6 waxed white / brown kevlar.
Eyes : Small stick on.
Head : Brown kevlar thread.
Body : Pearl mylar / white and brown bucktail.
Tail : White and brown bucktail / few strands of crystal
flash. |
 |
Tying Instructions
1) Make a base for the body from 6/0
waxed thread.
2) Run a thin strip of cement along this base.
3) Slip on a length of pearl Mylar tube so you have a body up
to about two thirds the hook.
4) Tie of at the bend, cement and put a tiny drop of super glue
to keep it together.
5) You can snip the thread then. I use a light thread here just
to keep the body dimensions passable.
6) Attach brown kevlar ahead of body, tie off and then tie in
brown bucktail (not too much).
7) Turn hook upside down in vise and tie in a few strands of
crystal flash (color to suit).
8) Tie in white Bucktail and secure the lot.
9) Turn hook back around and build up the head with the brown
thread.
10) Stick on the eyes. It gets finicky here so swear a lot, it
helps. I use a tiny drop of super glue
11) Apply a drop of 5 minute epoxy to head. This will help keep
it all together (I hope) and gives it a finished look and which
should help it swim right. |
Fly Notes |
Fishing Notes
I use a 7wt sinking intermediate (clear mono). My leader is a
standard tapered. If I'm worried about tailor being around I
do tie on a short wire trace to the hook eye and then my tippet
onto that so far so good and it has worked. I usually strip and
pause - strip and pause and not in much of a hurry.
This fly has caught Flathead and Tailor. |
Location Notes
Fish for flatties on appropriate tides
around drop offs, weed beds, where ever they may be. |
Prey Notes
I cant say what this fly exactly represents
but the spread bucktail could look like a number of things when
retrieved in a jerky fashion. The subtle shimmer material is
its strong point I suspect. |
