Tying Instructions
1) Flatten barb. Place hook in vice and tie bead chain eye on
top of the hook approximately 8 mm back from the eye end of the
hook. Add a dab of super glue.
2) Carefully tie in a small amount of orange bucktail behind
the bead chain so it runs along the shaft of the hook and extends
another hook length past the bend. No need to tie in down the
whole length of the shank, just a couple of mm behind the bad
chain is fine. Don't tie it down too tight to start with or the
bucktail will flare up. More super glue.
3) Turn hook over in vise so the hook is riding up. Take a clump
of black marabou (approx 1/3 to ½ of one side of a feather)
and tie it in between the bead chain and the hook eye, being
careful not to spike yourself on the hook. Ouch! Ideally the
Marabou should extend past the bend in the hook to be just a
bit shorter than the bucktail.
4) Now the flash. I tend to use anything from 5 - 10 strands.
Tie it in over the black marabou between the bead chain and hook
eye. Lengthwise it should extend just past the marabou.
5) Now take a smaller clump of orange marabou and tie it in so
it's like a throat or overwing on top of the black stuff and
the flash.
6) Build up a tapered nose with the thread. Tie off. I seal the
nose with clear nail polish. Orange nail polish would do just
as well. |
Fly Notes
I deliberately used small bead chain
for the eyes so the fly doesn't plummet like a brick when it
hits the water. I'd like to think it flutters gracefully and
enticingly down through the water column but I'm probably just
playing with myself. Use heavier eyes if you prefer more of a
jig style fly. Occasionally I'll put a dab of yellow enamel paint
on the bead chain to make them more eye-like. |
Fishing Notes
This fly is well weighted at the head , with a free tail this
gives a great wriggle or swim when retrieved in short sharp twitches,
just like the natural. This does mean that in shallow water the
must retrieve continuously of with only short pauses to avoid
being snagged.
The fly's weight can be reduced using bead chain for eyes on
even mono, however you still need some weight at the head to
get the desired action on retrieval.
Target species include, Australian Bass primarily, though it
would be worth a shot as a dawn/dusk light saltwater fly. |
Location Notes
Typical bass hot spots. Snags, sunken trees, weed beds etc. |
Prey Notes
Attractor type fly. I use a strip, pause, strip retrieve to try
to get the marabou moving. |
