Mad Midge Ball
Dry
Freshwater
Hook : 12 dry
fly hook.
Thread : 8/0 grey.
Hackle : Soft grizzle saddle. |
|
Tying Instructions
1.Start by picking a feather with a little soft flue at the butt
tie in at the butt leaving a fair amount of flue.
2 Wind the soft hackle along the shank up to the hook bend and
back again , continue until the stiffer fibres start to wind
on. Continue to wind the stiffer fibres through the softer flue.
3 Tie off at the hookeye ( whipfinish etc).
3 The fly will now look the size of a ping pong ball., trim the
bottom flat and trim the top to form a half circle. Final size
will be dependant on size of the real thing ( you can leave them
at one size and carry clipper or make a few different sizes. |
Fly Notes
This is a copy of Kaj Busch's mad
midge ball from Australia's best trout flies, goes hand in hand
with the easy midge as a dropper. Bushy says the soft flue feels
more natural and fish hang onto it longer, also the flat bottom
is more realistic than the round balls you can buy as no midges
get under the surface during this insect mass orgy. |
Fishing Notes
Can be fished dead drift or slow figure 8 retrieve ( this helps
in low light to keep in contact with the fly and detect takes.
Targeted species, brown and rainbow trout. |
Location Notes
Fished to rising trout taking midge clusters from the surface
usually at dusk. E.G. dams in the Snowy mountains. |
Prey Notes
Exact representation of a mass group of copulating midges. |
