Peacock Schwapf

Tying Instructions
1) Insert bead over the hook and up the shank to the hook eye. Tie in thread and build it up behind the bead to secure the bead.
2) Grab 12-15 strands of Krystalflash approx 3 times the length of the hook shank. Tie it on top of the hook shank from the bend so the flash extends straight out the back over twice the length of the hook.
3) Tie in 4 strands of peacock herl at the bend and wrap around the thread to create a rope. Wind the peacock herl rope forward to create a body then tie it off at the head.
4) Take the clump of Krystalflash and pull it forward over the top of the body to create the back, then secure it behind the head. A slight upward pressure on the bunch of flash will help keep it on top of the herl body.
5) Carefully fold the flash back and add a couple of loops of thread to tie it down. The idea is to try to get it to flare backwards evenly around the fly.
6) Build up a small thread head. Whip finish and cement.
7) Trim the flared flash so it extends just past the hook bend.

Fly Notes
The SHWAPF is the Swept Hackle Wingless All Purpose Fly and is more of a tying technique than a particular fly. I first read about it on the Fly Anglers Online site in their Beginning Fly Tying section http://www.flyanglersonline.com/index.html
It is simple to tie and the best thing is you can use any combination of body and hackle materials you like. You could try dubbed body with a bunch of hair as the hackle. The Fly Anglers site has more on the various possible uses of the fly.
Fly tying historians might light to compare it to Franz Pott's famous Sandy Mite fly. They are not dissimilar. http://www.montanaflyline.com/rednews/2000/03/31/build/flybox/sandymite.shtml

Fishing Notes
I usually fish it as the point fly in a two nymph set up. I use the shwapf as a lairy attractor type fly and fish it with a smaller nondescript brown or black nymph tied on a dropper off the main line. If they don't take the shwapf, they'll grab the other one.
Target species Trout and carp.
