Tying Instructions
1. Start thread halfway up the shank and run back to the tie
in point above the barb.
2. Tie in a generous hunk of zonker fur for a tail - about two-thirds
shank-length.
3. Start dubbing the SLF at the tie in point as you would a nymph.
If you are using SLF for the first time - be warned it is quite
difficult to dub. Dub small amounts.
4. Dub a tight carrot shaped body about ¾ shank length.
Make sure you leave the front of the shank clear.
5. Take a bunch of deer hair. Remove the dross. Remove broken
tips and stack.
6. Spin the deer hair into a collar around the shank up close
against the dubbed body. If the hook shank is not bare (no thread
or materials) you may have difficultly forming the collar.
7. Trim the deer hair butts.
8. Take the tying thread back a few loose turns (toward the bend
of the hook) to encourage the deer hair to point backwards. Don't
flatten or flare the deer hair any further.
9. Commence dubbing again and form a generous head with the dubbing
material tapering to a blunt point at the eye of the hook.
10. Tie off and cement. |

Fishing Notes
Fish on shortish leader (2.7m including
tippet). Cast out to any sound or obvious movement.
Fish it shallow - don't add any weight to the fly. Let it sink
a little before starting the retrieve.
Strip back with a figure of 8 and vary with a few quick strips.
Use a stout tippet - 3-4kg. Takes are often savage.
Target species is Trout, although I have tied it in different
colors and heavier hooks as a saltwater fly for bream. |
Location Notes
Lake or river at night (or just on the onset of darkness). |
Prey Notes
General attractor pattern. It is a cross between a nymph, muddler
and smelt. |
