Tying Instructions
1. Place hook in vice and lay down
a bed of thread from the hook eye along to the end of the shank.
2. Tie in tinsel ribbing along with chenille and create an even
body (with chenille) to a position about 3mm from the eye of
the hook.
3. Cut a strip of rabbit to about the length of the hook shank
(a few millimeters longer won't cause too many problems). Trim
skin of the forward section (ie opposite end of the strip to
where fur points) into a point, this makes tying in a little
easier. Tie in behind eye.
4. Making sure strip lies neatly over chenille body take tinsel
rib through rabbit fur to secure to the fly body. 4-5 wraps are
usually sufficient.
5. Tie off tinsel, form a small head with thread and whip finish.

Fishing Notes
The rabbit fly is on of my all time
favorite streamer patterns. It has been highly successful on
the Tongariro river when fished down and across on a shooting
head and short leader (3 feet). I have been using the pattern
more recently as a smelt imitation on the western lakes (Victoria)
as it has a fantastic and very seductive action in the water.
Small strips seem to give it the best action. The Rabbit fly
is quick and easy to tie and very versatile, all variations to
the theme are worth trying.
Targeted species, Brown and rainbow trout, however in a larger
pattern it could be useful on salmon. |
Location Notes
Fly works great in both rivers and
lakes. |
Prey Notes
Great baitfish imitation, pattern
colors can be varied to suit local conditions. |
