12 Mustad
Thread : 8/0 bug thread
Tail : Red hackle
Rib : Peacock herl
Hackle : Hoffman super saddle (coachman brown) |

Tying Instructions
The red tag would be one of the easiest
flies to tie that I have come across that actually catches fish.
First tie the thread the full length of the hook, then tie in
hackle fibres on to the end. Once secure cut the tail to what
length to suit size of hook. Then tie three strands of peacock
herl at the end of the hook and wrap up the hook until about
4mm from the eye of the hook. Tie it off and cut of excess fibres.
Then tie in one hackle at the base of the feather. Wrap it around
8 - 10 times and be sure there are plenty of fibres sticking
out to ensure good floatation. Tie the hackle of, whip finish
it then your done...easy!!! |

Fishing Notes
When fishing with the red tags I have
found that a long tippet of no shorter than 90cm long should
be used. Also the finer tippet the better. I fish the red tag
generally with 3 - 4 lb Maxima tippet. It should be cast to a
rising fish, if you get a refusal then give the line a short
jerk & generally you should catch the fish. If this doesn't
work either try another fly or give up!
Rainbow & brown trout, although I have caught Carp to 5.5kg
using it. |
Location Notes
This fly is best fished when the fish
are feeding on the surface. The fly generally represents a beetle
so it is best fished around trees or other structures located
in or near the water that beetles inhabit. |
Prey Notes
Fly represents a beetle. This fly
is a half imitator & half attractor, with the red tag attracting
the fish. |
