Tying Instructions
1. Measure & tie in the wings
just back from the eye.
2. Tie them upright, separate & take thread towards bend,
tie in tippets.
Tie in floss just ahead of bend and take thread to bend, tie
in 2 herls & wind them around thread to make rope effect.
3. Take 2-3 turns around bend, tie down with floss, take thread
forward.
4. Take herls forward, wind floss over herls to thread, secure
& tie off.
5. Then still moving towards the eye of the hook, take herl another
2-3 turns & tie off, leaving room behind wing for hackle.
6. Tie in hackle, take a few turns behind wing, then take forward
& finish by winding the hackle towards the eye.
7. Finish by tying off hackle, trim, whip finish & varnish
head. |
Fly Notes
Experiment with tail material, brown
calf tail provides better floatability. I have used white calf
tail hair for wing material with good results. The hair is more
durable, floats & presents the fly better.
Also been tied with fan wings & hackle tips, and a parachute
with normal wing slips or a single tuft of white calf tail.
Best success with bronze/red brown fly, although I have introduced
ginger & yellow with little success. Best suited in a range
of hook sizes from 10 - 16, the smaller the better.
In low light conditions the wing tips come into their own. |
Fishing Notes
Best results achieved with floating
line. Can be used as a dry or wet fly. |
Location Notes
Upper to middle reaches of rivers,
casting to the under vegetation on lake margins. |
Prey Notes
Beetle like. |
