Hook : 4 - 8 long shank lure.
Thread :
Black.
Head : Black thread.
Body : Orange chenille.
Tail : Black squirrel.
Rib : Silver tinsel.
Wings :
Pukeko feathers 3.
Hackle :
Orange cock.

Scotch Poacher

Tying Instructions

1) Tie thread halfway down the shank.
2) Strip a small section of the end of the chenille leaving the internal string. Tie this in at the bend.
3) Tie in the Tinsel.
4) Tie in a slim longish tail of black squirrel tail fibres.
5) Wind body with Chenille. Trim tie off.
6) Rib with tinsel. Trim tie off.
7) Select 3 Pukeko feathers and remove excess fibres. Feathers should reach past the bend, but not past the end of the tail.
8) Lay the feathers one on top of each other to form a "superman Cape" . Tie in on top of the fly.
9) Tie in a large Died Orange Cock Hackle. Wind a typical wet hackle.
10) Whip finish and varnish head.

Fly Notes
This fly was first tied by Jock Kirkpatrick of Rotorua New Zealand. Jock was himself referred to as "an old scotch poacher", possibly because of his uncanny ability to catch fish. Thus when this excellent fly gained wide attention, it naturally adopted the nickname of its originator.

Fishing Notes
Fishes best with long slow strips .If tied on a big hook, don't forget to strike hard enough to bury the barb.
Target species includes, Trout both Brown and Rainbows.

Location Notes
Lakes, River Mouth, Back Waters especially at dusk, night or early morning. It is an excellent change of light fly.
