Tying Instructions
1) Cover shank up to hook bend with
mono thread, attach body material and wrap shank from near bend
to eye- tie off .
2) Tie in a bunch of white fibres in collar area ( under side
of hook), then tie in more white on top of shank, this time a
little thicker- make it a tall clump and not so flat . Also add
some flash here and around the lower belly area.
3) Now pick two grizzly feathers of similar proportions tie one
in each side on top of white fibre with feather flowing horizontally
and fibres perpendicular. So you can see the feather from the
side.
4) Add a little of the green fur over the grizzly feather making
sure you keep it thin so we can still see the grizzly pattern
underneath, keep adding small clumps till you have covered the
feathers on each side and on top / between the two feathers.
5) Add a little more flash. Add a little strip of blue material
on top of the fly to complete the wing.
6) Build up head to desired size with the mono whip finish.
7) Use nail varnish or similar to fix head in place after this
has dried add the eyes then varnish over again to secure.
8) Wet fingers with water and washing liquid, then using a small
dob at a time smear silicone toward hook bend, stopping just
a few millimetres before. Apply first on top of wing then each
side and finally the underside of the fly's collar,. The coat
only need be thin but be sure to impregnate into the fibre, this
will ensure that the wing will no foul on the hook during casting.
Ensure plenty of clean fibre extends past the hook bend so that
the fly retains some tail wiggling action when striped.
9) You can optionally thin some silicone with mineral turps (seems
not to be thinning but mix it thoroughly for a long time and
then it thins out). You can brush this on then work in with wet
fingers then smooth out. |

Fishing Notes
Leader can be of the knotless saltwater
version as with Harro's or home made tapers even simply 8 foot
of 6kg with a bite tippet attached. I usually vary the strip
and retrieve till I get a response from the fish. Often a slow
jerky retrieve will work, I like to cast so as to retrieve my
fly with the current.
This fly is mainly used on tailor, salmon, bonito and other pelagic
type species that frequent harbours etc. However I can add flathead
and some big bream to the list as well. |
Location Notes
Typical location is anywhere you'd
expect to find the target species. This fly is mainly used on
tailor, salmon, bonito and other pelagic type species that frequent
harbours etc. I like to cast to washes, structure, drop-offs
and eddies in the current that are close to deep water. |
Prey Notes
The idea was to imitate small slimy mackerel. |
