Zonker Minnow

Tying Instructions
1) Place hook in vice. If a weighted fly is desired, cut a piece of lead tape to body shape.
2) Remove backing and secure to body.
3) Cut a section of pearl Mylar long enough to extend 1/3 past hook bend. Attach at head of fly.
4) Cut a strip of zonker strip to extend 1/3 past hook bend. Attach at head of fly.
5) Attach a small tuft of red rabbit to imitate gills.
6) Form a neat tapered head, whip finish and remove thread.
7) Re-attach thread at rear of hook and secure Mylar. Pull zonker strip taught and secure with thread, careful not to tie down hairs.
8) Whip finish at rear of fly; add a drop of head cement.
9) Fray extended Mylar for tail.
10) Paint on eyes if desired.

Fly Notes

Fishing Notes
Great little minnow pattern. Vary the body colour (ie. Gold Mylar) and zonker strip to imitate local minnows. The zonker strip (one of my favorite materials) adds a lot of life to this pattern. Weighting the fly with the lead tape adds form to the body and helps it sink quickly in fast moving waters. If a lighter version is desired you can attach a piece of fine wire front and rear of hook to form body. One last note, don't let the zonker strip extend past hook bend too far or it has a tendency to foul when casting.
Target species is smelting Trout.
