The Tiers Pattern Comments
1. Grant Marshall Afterburner Similar fly to the sunset fly, caught my biggest trout ever the first night I used one.
2. Richard Carter Trout Gurgler A night time surface fly.
3. Ashley Morrow Red Setter A great pattern for lake searching at night (especially Eucumbene)and is also effective after dark when cast in the direction of slurping trout.
4. Ian Scotch Poacher A great NZ pattern - they seem to have a lot of good ones for night fishing
5. George Podmore Simple Fur Has worked in the Snowy Mountains this year, a snap to tie and seem to work well.
6. Laurie Ellul Purple Shadow Sort of a cross between a nymph, muddler and smelt pattern. I don't know what it is supposed to look like, but it works.
7. Kym Goldsworthy Faux Fur Bugger A wooly bugger variation using Faux Fur wool from a craft shop. I first tied it after reading Richard Carter's post on the materials board.
8. Bill Rendall The Morgan I have invented a fly to try to nail big afterdark feeders - I hope no one minds that I named my invention - The Morgan. It is a Luminescent Night fly with Black cock hackle and tail for contrast and motion to entice out large night feeders. Judging from the behaviour of Big Browns which lurk in trenches and pools in the Ovens River one would stand at the head and cast / payout the fly and then initiate a slow to occasional jerky retrieve - This should get em to budge.
9. Michael Butchard Black Muddler How can you go fishing at night without a muddler?
When there's bugger all to see you may as well use something that attracts a bit of attention to itself.
