G'day all, I have done a few searches and cannot specifically find the answers i need.

I have tinny which has a Honda BF30a on it (manual start) which has an elec output rated at 12v10a.

I took it for a spin the other ady plugged in my GPS to gauge speed. (connected via cig plug). However it seemed to be the case that teh GPS did not work at (blank screen) I am just wondering if the internal safety of the GPS deemed "too much"amperage was coming in??

If this is the case will I have the same problem when I put a battery in the boat - (not hooked up to motor - amp draw will be fine) But if i hook up teh elec output to the battery to charge up teh battery - will all my other application be receiving too much amperage. - possility of burning something out??

Any comments much appreciated

Cheers Daz

Are you sure it's a regulated output for devices? Chuck a multimeter onto it and see what it's actually doing. It's likely to be wildly high or low. Delicate devices like GPS & sounders will probably behave badly if the voltage goes above or below the stated range.

You can have a look at one of these:

G'day Blackbeast, thanks for the tip, I iwll whack the multi meter on and see what it is throwing out. (looks like a regulator maybe a good idea anyway)

umm ok - so Blackbeast from you have replied with - it would be the voltage that is causing the issue - not the amperage. if i regulate the amount of voltage from the motor output into the battery - then all should be good

Mate if it is a manual start with no battery that out let socket will be a.c to run some lights, you want to hope your gps has not been damaged because it uses dc.

If it is 12v AC then it will be time to get a battery. 12v AC is useless to do anything with (apart from running some lights unhappy-fish.gif ). If you could convince the motor to spit out 20V AC (or above) you could convert to DC @ 12V pretty easily.

Daz ,
Most pull start motors havent got a regulator rectifier fitted . I, fitted half a dozen of these over the last couple of years for mates that have bought boats & then decided they want to run lights & sounder etc. Get a regulator rectifier & I reckon your prob will be solved

G'day All,

Thanks for all the replies, i havent had a chance to fire up the motor since posting, i will look at this in the coming days. i will check to see what is being pumped out (ac/dc) voltage (cranking and normal operation), from there I will be able to see what is needed as per suggestions above.

Thanks everyone for going to the effort of replying

Cheers Daz

My 20hp honda came with a rectifier already in it.
I can run an electric motor / sounder / CD player for most of the day and after a few hours the volts (as stated on my lowrance) will drop below 11.5. If I start the honda engine and give it revs, the volts will gradually increase. This will not sufficiently charge the battery to keep using the electric motor, but will keep the other electrics running.

I found out the hard way. I accidentally ran my 18hp Tohatsu pull start without the battery connected resulting in one fried Garmin sounder. DOH !!!
