Can we get a list?

No - we can't, according to the Government. The 500 companies are not an identified list. The figure of 500 is just an estimate of how many companies in Australia would be caught by the scheme's eligibility rules.

Here's how it works: any company which has a facility (plant, factory, premises or similar) directly emitting more than 25,000 tonnes of carbon a year will be forced to cough up $23 a tonne for that pollution. Now, this is a bit tricky, because it means a company with 20 facilities each emitting 24,000 tonnes of CO2 a year would not be liable, while some poor boob with one factory emitting 26,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide and 19 clean green beansprout-fired tofu smelters would still have to cough up.

thats fair and just isnt it angry-fish.gif angry-fish.gif angry-fish.gif angry-fish.gif

The companies will have the biggest incentives to cheat and worm their way out of paying this tax. I'm sure they will find a way to fudge the figures to make it look like they are emitting less co2 than they really are.

To actually reduce emissions they either have to reduce productivity, sack people and make less profit, or invest in new technology with will cost money, but in a lot if situations is not possible.

Or just cop the tax, pass it the costs on to consumers, keep pumping out co2 in order to keep making max profit. That is what most will do I would think so why will emissions drop?

I would have thought the companies have a certain incentive already as the more co2 they produce the more energy they are using and the more production costs them, they should be operating pretty efficiently already.

Cheers,

Dave
