Wont have probs doing that & is the best option if one battery has gone flat the full battery will boost charge back to the flat one.
All those gizzmo's are is a form of a smart switch great if you're runing 2 different types of batteries or if your motor is running an alternator instead of a stator type charging system _________________ **************************

Krazy, is there any problem setting your switch to charge both batteries whilst under way?
Cheers,

I am not trying to tell anyone how to suck eggs here as must people know about what I am about to say. But just incase someone is reading this and is unaware of the situation, not all battery isolation switches can be switched (moved) while the engine is running. I suspect all of the "name" brands are fine but some of the 'el cheapo brands will break the connection in transition before they make the new connection. This can cause severe damage to the engine regulater.

no problems at all Grant.
its the cheapest way & both batteries will charge whilst in both position. however if you forget to manually switch over to 1 or the other ( which does happen ) both batteries can be run down whilst your @ anchor fishing with your radio , stereo , sounder , gps , lights , pumps , ect.
what the BLUE SEA add a battery system does is take all the guesswork out of your battery system . so you have a heavy duty ACR ( automatic charging relay) & a matched switch that has an on & emergency position.
this allows you to have a stand alone house supply battery that charges whils your engine runs as well as your starting battery.
once your engine is cut & there is no chance of voltage being robbed from the stating battery at all. all this with no need whatsoever to touch the switch , the ACR does have a cut in & cut out voltage , but unlike the smaller type VSR's which are vunerable to feedback currents under certain cranking conditions ( which will take the VSR out of action) the ACR has heavy duty circutry which WILL handle 120 amps & can be set up for start isolation if required.
if you have a twin rig you can support up to 4 batterys by fitting two add a battery systems . this will give you a separate start battery for each engine , a stand alone house supply battery & a separate winch battery.
because of the circutry within the switch itself it also makes an easy job to set up your crossovers which will allow you to start the port engine with staboard battey & vise versa. it covers all the bases. _________________ If you don't have time to do it right, will you have time to do it again ???

I know some 4WD VSR's will adjust the current accordingly for dissimilar batteries but do all marine VSR's do the same? IMO, if in doubt, run the same size battery.

What happens when one battery gets sick, won't the sick battery take the charge from the good battery and stop it from charging?
Is that not a bit risky? if one battery dies after a few trips you will have 2 flat batteries and you wont know till its too late, charging them separately is better imo.

yes it can. The sick battery will draw power from the good battery. IMO its always best to be able to totally isolate a battery incase one dies. Not too sure tho what will happen while underway and trying to charge one sick and one good battery. I would suspect the sick battery would try and take most of the available charge. I have a mate who is an auto-elec. I will ask him what happens.
As far as charging seperately, you can only do this if the engine has two regulators for two outputs or via a VSR.
I charge separately by switching to battery 1 or 2 and don't put the switch on both.
Start on battery 1 drive out, start on battery 2 and drive in, or always start on 1 and then switch to 2 to charge some of the time.
My battery 1 is good and use for starting and 2 is older and generally only use for sitting at night with lights on etc. I will get another new one at some stage and rotate again.

I looked at just a switch as you said. Just have to remember to switch.... Then I saw how many people forget basic things like BUNGS!, bait, tackle boxes & thought automatic seemed like a good idea
VSR means it switches automatically to charge each battery. Had one for years & works very well. Just turn off at end of the day (usually saves climbing back on boat to turn off the radio)
