I wouldn't spend $600 on a bream rod or a squid rod.
Jay would you mind explaining the bennifits of an EGI rod.
I have seen EGI rods much cheaper than $600, but without know what they are supposed to feel like hard to tell if they are just using the name or the real deal. |

Dont need to spend $600 bucks on a squid rod.
I got one from Kamikazee in Brooklyn for $64 and love it, light and great action. And it's got a mean looking squid pic on it. I also have a Shimano Catana/Solstace 2500 combo and a few Shiman Sonic Pro/Sienna 2500 SP combos that are virtually identical and work great, $69 bucks for each combo from BCF. |

Unless I am mistaken those Shimano rods are just standard graphite spin rods, not the EGI specific rods which are currently being pushed in a big way with in most cases rediculous price tags.
IMO there is nothing wrong with using a regular graphite spin rod and that is the point of this thread that regular non EGI gear does a great job of catching squid. |

Biggest benefit is guide setup very rare you'll get line wrap around guides & if you do quick flick of wrist & line is free.
Those guys using standard spin sticks spend all their time unrabbling line off guides if any breeze blowing but they wont admit to it esp if they're using braid.
Rod length is another asset extra foot or so EGI's have just a pleasure to use
PRICE
You're paying top $ for high end rods but you get quality high end hardware which lasts for years
$70 rods wildfihy mentioned are fine not the high end graphite & are fitted with cheap chi nee guides
12 months down the track they will tarnish but hell for $70 throw the rod away & buy another one if appearance bothers you _________________ **************************

| I have used the Kamikazee rod, kakuban, I think it's called quite a lot now. Jaygee is right about the guides. Line does not wrap around them like some of the others. I think it is great and noticed no deterioration on the guides yet. For he price if I was setting up for squid I would not hesitate to go get a few of them. |

Squid are the dumbest animal out there, and can be tricked into grabbing almost anything. One of my squid outfits I found at the local rubbish tip. Must have caught 300 squid on that last year |

The only thing egi about the Kamakazi is the word printed on it, they are a single tapered graphite rod that is designed to cast up to 5 grams, how many own an egi that weighs 5 grams.
There are many factors that make an egi rod an egi rod, first and foremost is the taper set up, a true egi rod is made up of multiple tapers to get increased speed of the top half of the rod, second is the casting power, they are designed to cast 12-32grams, then the guides then the balance. I challenge any one that has a kamakaze rod to deadlift a 1kg squid out of the water with nothing but the rod. A real egi rod can do this.
If you dont like it dont do it and dont buy it. It was not that long ago where people where bagging me on this same site for fishing with plastics and paying out on me because I owned a plastics specific range of rods. I dont think any one on this site would target snapper with a handline with cat gut and a merabau jig as they did years ago, they evolved and bought task and species specific gear.
Sadly there are many so called egi rods on the market that are simply light weight lure casting rods with low ride guides. It is important to remember that egi rods are jigging rods, they are designed for mechanical jigging. If you are happy to leave a rod in the rod holder or lightly lift your jigs up and down then you will be fine using any rod or reel with any line, if you choose to fish more aggressive and get more from your casting then an egi rod is for you. I suppose its like tools, would you buy a hammer to put screws in. If you hit em hard enough and often enough they would go in but a power driver would be more efficient. _________________ When some one says "you have changed!" it simply means you have stopped living life their way

seacarp - you spend 600 on whiting setup. mate you dont need that sort of gear . i can catch em on a handline, or a $ 20 kmart combo.
but as you know a good specific setup is so much nicer and ultimately beneficial to use.
obviously you spend good dollars on gear, therefor probably have a good relationship with a local tackle shop, ask him to borrow a decent egi rod and reel setup, and give it a try. shit , you may enjoy using the gear. _________________ go hard , get em green |
