Hi fellers.

I have a 99 GU 4.5lt Patrol which has the standard lpg system fitted.
I find the car performs poorly for towing power wise(1500kg to Eden).
When I bought the car it had no gas and it went like the clappers and I loved it but after driving away with the new lpg system I had a tear in my eye with all the power lost.

I had a quote for $1800 to upgrade from standard to Vapor gas system.

I'll bite the bullet and pay the $1800 for the upgrade but I need to know if it's going to perform like it did when it was straight petrol.
My GU is auto and also has extractors.

Thanks.

I'd love to know what type of system you have Gozz as there are some shitty poor quality ones out there, can tell you a story of a fellow fisho who had the same dillemma on his GU, he had a piss poor simple mixer system & had very poor performance & worse ecomony to boot so I advised him to get it ripped off & get an Impco airvalve system fitted with the bigger 425 mixer, to save him coming all the way to me to get it done we located a good fitter in Melbourne who did the job & he now has a vehicle that does the job properly without having to go the extra expense of injection. Be VERY careful, just because you bolt an injection system on it doesn't mean all your problems will be solved, there are some bloody awful ones of them on the market too that just don't cut the mustard & I would reckon that $1,800 is only going to get you a sub standard system, we fit Impco / BRC injection systems & I can't even buy an underbonnet kit for that sort of coin, in fact you would need to spend that sort of money just to go to an Impco air valve kit I reckon.
Hope this helps, all I can say is do a LOT of homework as you don't want to spend that sort of money on a crap injection system to find out you still have issues.

Thanks heaps Quanger.
I was hoping you would answer my post.
I took some pics of the gas system in my car(sorry took them with Iphone in the dark).
By the looks of it the mixer is a baby and the gas system I never really heard of them before.
It's a LPG1 standard system they fit to their cars.

If it was you what would you do.
I'll ring the fitter I spoke to and I'll ask him which system he want's to fit.
Oh by the way what is involved in fitting a vapor system.
Thanks again mate.

Not really a big issue, it's just a vacuum hose & very light vacuum at that, still, it looks a bit ordinary.
Gozz check your pm's mate.

Hi mate, nevilles info is allways good advice & informative,as i work in the the automotive industry aswell, one thing is for sure,a poorly fitted lpg system will allways give you problems but most important your car will never have the performace it deserves.
On a diffrent note,@ 70 -90cents per ltr,gas is no longer a viable alternative fuel.I sold my gq patrol last november & gas was @50 cents.Im glad i bought a diesel.

Yes mate he's very switched on.
Yeah all you mentioned has been going through my mind lately.
For $1800 I am taking a risk but if it works it will be worh it.
I reckon I do about a tank full a week so gas is still affordable and at the same time I'm hoping I get better economy with the new system.

It will probably come all down to the tune as to what results you will achieve.

Our 4.8lt is running injected LPG, installed by a highly recommend installer and the tune was terrible at first. There was a bit of a hole in the power delievery and very high consumption.

After taking it back for a retune the power is the same as petrol drives really well but unfortunately there is still higher than expected fuel consumption on cruise and it appears to be running too rich at idle.

Under load the LPG has about 10% greater consumption than petrol, same load same roads which is pretty good.

Thanks for the info mate.
I'm not sure how similar the 4.5 to the 4.8 cause of the twin over head cam but I'm hoping to achieve the same result as you did.
Can I ask which system they fitted to your patrol.
And when they tuned it was it dyno tuned.

The 4.8 is very diffrent in terms of power & torque,so this comes at a cost of fuel consumption. The 4.8 in its unleaded fuel form has x2 fuel tanks that have about 138 lts,& also empty them in under 550ks.The problem with the 4.5 is that it a slow motor, but not bad for what it is.
Make sure the valves are ajusted every 20,oookms & the lambda(fuel ratio)is set up right.Dont forget like the 4.2 diesel engine, the petrol engine(4.5 is based on the 4.2 petrol) started life back in 1988,so the motors are a little dated but work fine & are reliable.
