Not sure if compulsory lifejackets is the answer. I would like to have a choice whether to wear one or not, depending on the location I fish. Sometimes it might be better to swim out rather than being buoyant in the white water smashing my head on the rocks.
Perhaps a rock fishing safety test should be mandatory to obtain a fishing licence.
Here is a good site link where you can get info and a free rock fishing safety DVD:

Sadly these people seem not to heed the advice given them, yesterday a friend and I made the trek to "julianne" a well known and patronised rock fishing platform to replace a missing angel ring, and what was the sight that greeted us ....... 6 guys fishing there, this is after rockfishing safety alerts via the radio, websites etc, two of these blokes had no cleats, standing down low in a very dangerous location, were wearing thongs with their pants rolled up, the seas were huge yesterday and I asked these two blokes did they want to die???, if they could swim ? and if they could how well, NO was the reply we received, I kinda got a bit mad at them and told them they had no business being there and if they were smart they should get the hell out of there. The other 4 guys did have cleats on and had some idea of what they were doing and told us they were going to leave due to the dangerous conditions, but in all honesty none of them should have been there in the first place, and really they knew it too. We were trolling for marlin in close last weekend and saw the police boats and choppers looking for the poor bloke who drowned, a little while ago we also saw the lifesaver chopper dragging the body of another unfortunate out of the water near pussycat. It is all so avoidable if only people would stop and think , how sad some family are now missing a loved one , some child is missing a father, for gods sake use some common sense, listen and follow advice regarding conditions, and if you cannot swim just stay the hell off the rocks, a couple of fish just isn't worth it.

I totally agree with you Frank, don't get me wrong. That is why I purchased a manual inflation life jacket. I want to be in control of when and where it gets inflated. My opinion is I don't want it inflating whilst I'm being dragged across a barnacle covered rock. Better for it to be in its protective cover until i'm in the brine and away from danger. There is a whole separate debate as to the pros n cons of auto inflating jackets versus manual, but I like the idea of being able to swim out and then inflate when in clean water. People will argue 'what if your incapacitated when you get washed in?' History IMO shows most people who are washed in are well n truly conscious when they pop up in the suds. Its the next bit that kills them.
I also like the idea of a mandatory 'rock fishing endorsement' as part of your licence, if you want to fish off the stones. I'm sure there will be plenty of debate against this, but no one can argue that the current system isn't working, (Darwin clause excepted).
