Paul there are two lengths each with two models, sizes in that rod range, they work fine for me.

Also not sure why I want to pull a kilo squid right out of the water when I have a landing net.

Cheers.

Lifting squid without contact lessons the chance of squid inking all over the place, it also demonstrates the rods power in comparison to a light weight graphite flick stick. When casting a 28g egi with your full power you are putting more than 1kg of weight velocity through the rod. They work fine for you as like many others have yet to use a true egi rod. I have used a Kamakaze Kakuban rod and it is identical to most light weight single tapered spin rods the one I used was called Assassin pro egi rod rated to cast 20 grams with a line rating of 1-3kg, it has not the ability to cast squid jigs with the anglers full power you can feel the rod reach it full load limit when casting and any one who is fishing 1-3kg of line class on a rod rated to cast 20 grams is going to struggle to get things right, most egi rods are rated PE1 to PE2.5 or 6 - 10 kg line clas for casting alone. As a matter of interest have you been able to find out from Kamakaze what an egi rod actually is, I asked and am yet to get an answer. Strange that they can build an egi rod yet not know what makes it an egi rod.

You do not need to spend mega bucks on an egi rod to actualy get an egi rod, the cheaper models retail for around $140 with the Gladiator egi equip and then they jump to the $300 bracket with the Daiwa and Shimano models, for the record the Shimano Sephia AU is not an egi rod, it is a Catana painted with low ride guides. If you want a true shimano egi stick look at the BB models.

I have a corner in my garage dedicated to all the rods that claim to be egi rods, 24 thus far, sadly some companies chose to cash in on the hype rather than develop rods properly. This is where the frustration from many anglers comes from, people getting cranky at the whole egi thing because tackle companies and media groups talk about egi equipment as if they know what its all about, yet for most its just a buzz word and nothing to do with its true meaning, in one of Victoria's biggest tackle stores I heard a staff member address a crowd of approx 100 and tell them that egi means calamari, the same person writes articles about egi fishing. This is an indication of how the Australian tackle industry is taking advantage of the regular every day punter and how people can get so pissed off when they are continually lied to about products. This is not limited to egi, you will find in the next year or so the same occurrence will show with things like popping and jigging as it did years ago with plastics and more recently hard body lure fishing.

Think back to when squid jigs started appearing on shelves and the instruction by the tackle companies about how they work, we were all told just tie em on and stick em in the rods holders, or cast em out slow lift and retrieve. These methods caught squid and still do today, that said more squid and a better quality of squid is caught by using the gear as it was designed, it has only been in the last few years with youtube and facebook that we are now starting to see how these products are used, now all of a sudden its the tackle companies maketing these new techniques at the Australian market when in fact it was the Tackle companies who lied to us all in the first place and now we get the truth from outside the tackle industry. Some of us are lucky enough to have experienced instruction first hand from the people who make and design these lures without any tackle industry influence.

Thanks Paul, once again you proven that you are the squid man!

Re the net and net...that's why I rarely fish for squid in the Formula, got sick of washing it. Got a tinny dedicated to the squid.

The Kakuban is my squid rod, not sure about number of tapers, etc, but I'm tipping I've taken 300 squid on it since August, so I'll call it my squid rod. wink-fish.gif

Got some q's for you re jigs, pm on its way. Michael. wink-fish.gif

Thanks for that post about the EGi rods.

Would you mind sharing which jigs you use in which situations?

Quite typical that companies rebadge one style of rod for another.all rods work just some really are specific to a style, a few years back I used a $800+ egi rod and it was like nothing else around its taper very specific , did it catch more squid ?... no not for me.. but I catch squid as quick as possible to give me more time to fish for more challenging species ..Some of these companies would do better to cut the tip off a 9ft medium taper black fish rod than use a sp rod and claim its a specific egi rod.

Not all of us have bloody big drag nets laughing-fish.gif

Think you're missing the point you're looking @ squiding as a bait gathering exercise & yep it's a pee off when wanting the slippery little suckers as bait & it becomes time consuming tat's when i wished i had a drag net laughing-fish.gif

There's days when i just go out to squid nothing else a few egi rods & those are some of the most enjoyable days i have on the water exept when i've got to clean bloody ink stains off the boat
