Hi...am looking into repowering my father in laws quintex 475 bayhunter.....which I have boguht cheaply.....it has an old 2 stroke carby 50 merc on it with over 700 hours to date....
So as it is now becoming costly to maintain and has had ome tough treatment I am considering which of the 60 HP 4 strokes are best suited....
1. Yamaha 60 4 stroke EFI - tried and proven and lgiht weight at only 112 kilo
2. Suzuki 60 HP 4 stroke...3 cylinder but smaller cc displacement than yammy but a real lightwaeight at 92 kilo...a bit more expensive than yammy
3. Honda 60 Hp 4 stroke....lovely engine but only 3 cylinder vs 4 in the yammy and way over priced against competition
4. Mercury 60 HP 4 stroke....similar to Yammy spec and a little cheaper
5. Etec.....not interested
6. Tohatsu...no dealer support
So it seems a choice between yammy over mercury based on weight 4 cylinder larger dispklacement block....and keenly priced....and good dealer back up
The suzuki has alot of fans.....but in this power range what do you think.....will troll alot and cruise in boat mainly for fishing around PPB |

go for the mercury fourstroke
and get it optioned with smartcraft
this option includes troll control, basically program in revs (between set limits) press a button, and its stays at that speed. plus having the smartcraft gauge also gives engine temp.
it will put the price up slightly but its well worth it. i owned one of these and ran into a sand bar within the first 10hrs, put the temp screen up and was able to watch it before anything bad happened! _________________ trying to keep the " YACHT" owners going... and i dont mean WAFI'S...

Have always been a Yamaha man but have recently have been working in the marine industry and in particular at a mercury dealership (which i used to hate ..... black anchors etc) but i have to admit i have been impressed by the product to the company and after sales etc.
Have a look at the 60 bigfoot (basically a 60 with the 70 bottom leg), very impressive.
Like i said 2 years ago i would have said just buy the Yammy but now i would definitely consider the Merc, especially the 60 |

Do some research get the weights of motors then go with biggest HP motor for the weight.
Not so you can be one of those opti men & warp speed everywhere
My logic behing more hp is why thrash when you can cruise along
Once said i'd never own a merc & ended up bolting the 1st of the US models on the back of smaller boat 2 odd years down the track cant fault it after 350 hrs
Still like the F series yams on back of other boat they dont miss a beat either _________________ **************************

Hi mate, why this?
5. Etec.....not interested
They seem to have good power to weight ratio, clean running, quiet, economical etc.
Something turned you off them?
If you are set on a 4 stroke, I'd look at the 70hp Yamaha.
Cheers. |

I have the 60hp yam 4/s really good motor plenty of power great economy nice bit of kit that's not to say the others aren't good either but i can recommend the Yammy.
How much does your boat weigh?
Would the 70 yam be better? |
