Hi All and thanks for your constructive assistance.
The inner bearing seal has always been my greatest concern as it cannot be inspected for water contamination as easily as the outer. From the discussions it appears that if there is positive spring tension from the bearing buddy the grease is forced through the axle helping maintain the waterproof seal on the inner bearing. Is this the case? |

are there any negatives to carrying a spare wheel/hub assy. on the winch post and another mount on drawbar as a beach launch wheel?
assume lack of use may sieze mounted bearing or theft to be only issues?
thanks

My boat trailer is 7 year sold & came with bearing buddies, I do my bearings every 12 months & was always finding a lot of water had gotten in to them each time, tryed the 2 piece seals with the stainless outer ring, have given the bearing buddies the flick & gone back to the old 1 piece standard type seals & the last 2 times I've done 'em there was little or no evidence of water so the buddies can stay off as far as I'm concerned. _________________ PROUD MEMBER OF THE F.F.F.C.

I recently replaced a set of bearings in a mounted spare hub assy. on an offroad trailer (Land Rover hub and bearings). The vertically mounted hub had never been used in the many years that it had been on the trailer but the bearing rollers had marked the cones crossways. I'm not sure if it was improper adjustment and/or the tyre wasn't balanced properly (if at all) causing the wheel to travel in pretty much the same position for most of its life. I don't think that it should be too much of a dilemma for most of us as our rim/tyre combinations are lighter and we don't travel the types of tracks and distances that that trailer has seen but I reckon that it's still worth some thought.
I've always been lead to believe that the bearing buddy is only there to compensate for any pressure change inside the hub i.e. when a warm/hot hub is dunked in cold water, and the grease is only pumped in to preload the BB spring, not lubricate the front bearing. Just my thoughts.
Cheers,
Anthony.

| Hi Just tried to remove one of my bearing buddy caps and had great difficulty trying to get it off using a hammer. I carry a spare inner and outer bearing but greatly concerned if I need to replace a bearing when away on a trip. Does anyone know of a tool or method that will make this task easier ? Thanks in advance for your assistance. |
I have just removed mine using a reasonably snug fitting length of PVC tubing & it worked fine.

Hammer, general consensus tap them all round.
I thought I bought some decenet quality alko bb's however they are just crap, house them down each time I retreive and they have rusted and the chrome outer just flaked off.
Next move is to bin then and puts caps back on
btw can anyone recommend a decent set of bearing buddies, don't mind paying but not for inferior chinese shit masqurading under what I thought was a good brand |

I had the Dura Hub ones and had no problems.
I wasnt running the oil bath.
The Dura Hubs allow you to look to see if there is any water ingress and what the state of the grease is.

I've had oil filled Dura Hubs for years and haven't had a problem, even though I have to drown them to launch and retrieve. Can't recommend them highly enough. _________________
