For the money spent you are better off buying a chart plotter.
You can purchase the Navionics application from ITunes for $45.99.
You will be relying on having Internet access on the water to have your iPad reading co-ordinates and the gps working.
I would not be relying on Internet service whilst being on the water. I suppose that is why we have marine radios.
Hope this has helped.
Cheers,

Let me clear this up, there is 2 kinds of ipad, 3g+wifi, and just wifi.
The plan WI-FI ipad does NOT have GPS, or AGPS. the 3g has AGPS+GPS.
you do not need internet access or celluar network to use GPS on the ipad3g . you need it to use AGPS, AGPS, is just gps, but it uses the network towers as well as gps satalites to increase performance, really helpful in cities, and congested areas, no advantage in the open, as your ipad3g will have no problem hooking up to the GPS satalites, like a normal GPS.
secondly, why do you need internet to use navonics tracking? the app has all the data already downloaded, i havent used it on IPAD, but i use it on my iphone, and it works flawlessly with no celluar reception.
and thirdly, every few weeks the navonics app goes on sale, i think i paid 9.99 for it. |

To add to this, the phone network connection only speeds out the inital location, once the location is locked in the phone network isn't used.
As to navionics on apples products. My brother has an iphone 4 and the software has heaps of bugs stops all the time phone has to be reset ect but works flawlessly on my android phone running android 2.1 orginally and now running android 2.3. |

Pretty sure the navionics app needs to be purchased to suit ipad as
it's not the same as iphone version.... this wont work on ipads..

| If you have the WI-FI only I-pad (without 3G), you can use an I-phone as a WI-FI hot spot so you can use the I-pad anywhere. |

I have the Ipad with sim card bc it has built in A-GPS which would work where there is no data or cellular network.
So do i have to shell out the $50 for NAVIONICS app or is there another just as good?
Thanks |
