All this talk about hijacking threads makes me wonder. Surely the posters who actually try to railroad a thread are in the vast minority? If replies had to relate EXACTLY to what was posted in the first intance of all thread topics then most threads would just die after a few replies. There is only so much you can say about a topic in most intances, surely the difference of opinions is what keeps threads alive. confused-fish.gif confused-fish.gif

I dont think a post needs to exactly relate to what was originally posted but it should be at least relevant to it.

Take the post about tax effective saving for kids. The person who started it got bugger all replies about the actual topic and it very quickly turned into a union beat up. Thats fine if people want to spruke their own agenda but when it goes off on a wild tangent like that one has, I think it ruins the thread.

I don't think there are many out there who deliberately set out to wreck or hi-jack a thread, but we do have plenty of people who are so focused on making their point and convincing others that they are correct, that they forget what the original topic was about.

I'm all for keeping a thread alive but what is the point if it ends up being so far removed from the original topic that it becomes irrelevant or, it turns into a series of personal attacks !

I think a good debate is one that stays on topic with people expressing their opinions, whilst respecting other's.

Agree quanger, very few people are trying to hijack a thread for negative reasons, and its OK to have differing views. Most times the enjoyable content is not the direct reply, but the conversation that takes place on or around the issue raised.

Its usually when someone doesn't like the position taken by other members that they start complaining about threads being hijacked. Re pale-ales education one; if the replies were pro-union then I'm sure there'd be none of the current 'holier than thou' members crapping on about hijacking etc, quite probably some anti-union people doing so.

100%..... If you are having a conversation amongst friends around a beer, then the topic flows and changes.... Should be no different on a forum...

I'm assuming that you're refering to myself as a "holier than thou" member, as I was one of those members that "crapped on" about people hi jacking Pale Ales thread ? Well one line anyway.

You can post whatever you like about unions, good, bad or otherwise. I don't care. If the thread or debate was about unions, fine, go for it, as I said in another post I'd join in. My point was that Pale Ale asked for some advice and except for one post, and one line from yourself, the other three pages had nothing to do with his question. The fact that it was anti union is irrelevant and certainly didn't upset me, I just saw it as pointless. Pale Ale even tried asking the question a second time.

If others consider it to be conversation and/or debate thats fine, thats there opinion. I just have a different opinon, thats all. happy-fish.gif

Geez you guys that go on about threads being hijackled R weird & must not have much to talk about laughing-fish.gif laughing-fish.gif

If threads were left only replied in in regards to original Q or topic 90 % of them would only have a handfull of replies & fizzle away in no time

Majority of thread starters dont even bother replying to their own threads esp if they dont get the replies they want to hear or if people aren't doing suck ups to them

So why shouldn't others do this hijackaling thingy
