im against synthetic baits i enjoy the bait collection and teaching the young ones how to source it as my grangfather used to dig worms with me and put them in a plum jam tin then we rode our bikes down the ovens and caught some redies sounds better than opening a jar of technicolor crap
Powerbait sure has changed bait fishing for trout, the 'technicolor crap' as you call it works quite well.
Plenty of modern metrosexual anglers out there that don't want to get their hands dirty.
I'm not into fishing snobbery. In my opinion a trout caught on powerbait is as good as a trout caught on anything else.
I guess it comes down to how you go about enjoying the experience.
powerbait has not changed baitfishing for trout whats happened is youve been bedazzled by a bait that was desighned to imitate roe which is technically illegal when fishing for trout in victorian waters
i like my trout i even had smoked trout for entree last night
and if its open slather im good to go but lets stick to the rules and everything should run smoothly
Is it really designed to imitate roe? There would be some pretty odd looking roe out there if so, perhaps orange or yellow might a bit, but I don't think some of the more out there colours do.
They are bright colours and perhaps that triggers a response in them, or they may have some active ingredient that initiates a feeding response, although that seems unlikely as the stuff doesn't smell of anything. I tried it for Carp once and it was hopeless, so I'm not sure there's any attractor value other than visual stimuli.
I wouldn't mind betting that if you were to acquire the fish meal pellets that the Trout were fed everyday when they were reared you'd cane them, but that's probably not very sporting.

Never used this "powerbait" stuff. Do you rig it under a float, or just have it on the bottom.
G'day Pale Ale,
It's usually used on the bottom, with a very light sinker and a very light small hook. There are hooks specially designed for this bait, and made of very fine wire.
The reason is that Powerbait floats, so a very light hook allows it to float up above the bottom (and weed) and present in the fishes face, so to speak.
You adjust the leader length to suit the height of the weed.
I don't think brown trout are keen on it, but rainbows just love it.
From my experience, colour doesn't matter.

I can get the pellets quite easily here and I feed them too my little turtle. I have wondered about using them for burley. I might crush some and mix it with power bait and see what happens. _________________ http://swandvsfguiding.com/index.html
a few years ago when i fished lilydale lake 3-4 times a week for trout i would have a berley catapault and use the trout farm pellets as berley along with powerbait fished on the bottom, and it was a deadly combination

I reckon for me it's about 30 Rainbows to one Brown at Euc/Jindy.
I usually go a two hook rig, one with powerbait, the other with a worm or grub just so I'm a better chance for a brown.
in NSW it's five trout per day , a total of ten in position ,you have caught six peoples fish , . this would be a good reason for banning power bait , cause the greedy bastards are not sticking too the rules
in the seventies i would catch as many as a hundred trout in a day on lures but only keeped five for my family's use . bait fished are gut hooked fish _________________ some days my post get deleted
