my were originally in a wet box and read at any speed .
i wet faced them as it give a better and more detailed reading with less gain.
i used to run the gain at 8 to 10 in the wet box all the time but my hull is 25mm thick ,since the wet face 5 is heaps.
does it read any better ??really i wouldnt say either way ,but to be fair my sounder isnt set up properly either.
my wet face job will read at 40mph in flat water ,but once in the ocean i loose it over 20mph,chop and adam from nautek think its the wet face job not being rite,i really dont know.
if you are buying new transducers for the 585 id proably go with the ss264 kit with a high and low freq pair, easy to install and the best of both worlds with out the expense of wet facing .but best ask chop ,or adam from nautek they know more about that then me.
if i had my decision about wet facing again ,i proably wouldnt do it ,or if i did id get nautek to do it,unfortunatly all the good furuno guys are down south from me .
Thanks I will give it a miss then.
As to your other problems I also think they are user/setting error.
Our new boat has a furuno nav/sounder combo (cant remember the model) and it has a lot more settings than the 585. (Planning on using it as a full time nav unit as the split screen ect is a pain and 585 for sounder.) I have spent a lot of time playing with it and often end up with results like your screen shots if the settings are just not right.
With the 585 I normally run all the filters off or on there lowest setting. It is very easy to adjust and it just works.
The same settings just doesn't work with this other unit, it needs much higher filtering otherwise I cant run any reasonable amount of gain to provide detail. I normally find myself chasing my tail in an attempt to get a more detail and after multiple adjustments I end up with high gain and high clutter which gives crap results.
But on the few occasions when I get the settings right (I spent several hrs making adjustments whilst anchored) the detail is very good and I can pick up things I think I have never seen with the 585.

Gday Dave wetface installation aside
(unless the ducer has been effected in the process) i personally think
most of your issues are user issues
Just from what the little i,ve read here the gain/clutter settings
are contradicting themselves.
Have you had a chance to speak to Pete (Grand Marlin)
And the reverse issue that applies to most set ups mate.
yeah i spoke to pete ,he feels the same as me furuno ;hard to use always have been and looks like always will be;
i never had the reverse issue with the wet box.
and frozen what you just described is what ive been goin through for the last 6 months

Running twins in reverse there is shyte loads of aerated water
shooting over the ducer and dont matter how good they are
they are not designed to cope with it!!
In a wetbox placement is genearlly in the guts avoiding the issues

sorry i missed this thread lately ,yeah its goin pretty good now ,chop organised shane to have a look at it for me ,the transducers wernt earthed to to unit properly ,and a bunch of settings were wrong mainly the pulse length was at short 1 ,its now at long .a few other things.i had a electronic company up here comission everthing ,but they obviously didnt know what they were doing.its still a pretty complicated unit but at least now i only need to adjust depth and tvg .
its so clear i can count the slimies on the bait jigs.
first pic shows the bait jigs going down ,and finally marked a solid fish in the second pic.the other thing is its so powerful it doesnt need any gain .
